- Udaipur also lists game meat dishes, so ask
Udaipur is easy for vegetarians, until it is not. Incredible India says Rajasthani cuisine is traditionally vegetarian, and also says Udaipur's royal kitchens include game meat dishes made with ghee, chillies and garlic. So the city has both, and a menu can have both. This guide gives you the dishes to look for, what is in them, and what to ask. We name no restaurants, because we have not checked any.
1. Dishes the official pages name
- Dal baati churma: a lentil curry, baked or pan-fried wheat balls (baati) and sweet crushed wheat (churma), served with ghee.
- Gatte ki sabzi: gram flour dumplings in a tart, yoghurt-based gravy, eaten with roti or rice.
- Ker sangri: a tangy dish of desert beans and berries, named among the traditional Mewari dishes.
- Ghewar: a dessert of flour, ghee and milk, deep-fried and soaked in sugar syrup, topped with nuts and saffron.
2. What "vegetarian" does and does not cover
- Vegetarian here is not the same as vegan. Ghee, yoghurt and milk are central to the dishes above.
- Onion and garlic are common. If you avoid them, say so.
- Jain food, no onion no garlic, and eggless are separate requests. Ask for each one you need.
3. Phrases to use
- "Pure veg kitchen?" Ask whether the whole kitchen is vegetarian, or only some dishes.
- "Bina pyaaz lehsun?" For no onion and garlic.
- "Is there any meat or egg stock in this?" For gravies.
- "Ghee ya oil?" Ask what the baati and sabzi are cooked in if that matters to you.
4. Ingredients to verify
- Ghee: standard in baati and churma.
- Dairy: yoghurt in gatte ki sabzi, milk in ghewar.
- Sweetness: churma is sweet, so expect it on the thali.
5. Accessible meal stops
We found no official step-free restaurant list for Udaipur. For parents, ask your stay for a place with a ground-floor table, and ask whether the dining room is up stairs before you go. Rooftop tables are common in the old town, so confirm there is a lift.
