- IndiGo warned of Varanasi fog delays on 2 Jan 2026 (News18)
November to February is the comfortable window for walking the ghats. The trade-off is fog, which hits the way in and out more than the stay itself.
1. Temperatures
Incredible India's Varanasi monthly ranges show November at 10.8 to 32.9 °C, December at 6.0 to 29.1 °C, January at 4.5 to 27.9 °C and February at 7.7 to 31.9 °C. Mornings on the river are cold, afternoons are mild. Pack layers for dawn boat rides, and for parents, something warm for the evening aarti.
2. The fog problem
On 2 January 2026 News18 reported that IndiGo had warned of possible delays at several airports, including Varanasi, because of dense fog, with IMD forecasting poor visibility. That is one report from one winter, not a forecast for your dates. Treat it as a reason to leave slack: do not book a tight same-day connection, an evening flight after a morning event, or a train with a hard deadline behind it.
3. Crowds
We found no official crowd data for these months. The Ganga Aarti is a daily event, and the district website says devotees swell to thousands on auspicious days. Check the festival calendar for your dates before you fix hotels.
4. What to book first
- The way in and out, with a buffer day if a missed flight would hurt.
- A hotel near the ghats, with a clear drop point.
- Sarnath after you have fixed the day, since the museum is closed on Fridays.
5. What we could not verify
We did not get an official fog-day count or rainfall table for Varanasi in these months, so we do not quote one. Check IMD's forecast close to your date.
