Varanasi to Ramnagar Fort as a day trip: what a realistic itinerary looks like

Ramnagar Fort sits across the Ganga from Tulsi Ghat and is open 10 to 5 daily. Here is a sample half-day plan with a return buffer, and what we could not confirm.

Ramnagar Fort is the easy add-on that most Varanasi trips skip. It is on the other bank of the Ganga, so the question is how you cross, and how you get back before it is dark.

1. What is confirmed

  • Incredible India places the fort on the eastern bank of the Ganga, opposite Tulsi Ghat. It is an 18th-century red sandstone fort built by Maharaja Balwant Singh.
  • It lists the fort as open every day, including public holidays, from 10 AM to 5 PM.
  • Inside are temples, including the Durga Temple and a temple to Ved Vyasa, and a museum of royal items such as vintage cars, costumes and weapons.
  • Incredible India says a boat ride takes about 30 minutes. We could not confirm from which ghat that figure applies.

2. What we could not confirm

We found no official page for ticket prices, camera rules or museum gallery timings, and no official road or bridge travel time from the city side. A third-party tourism site lists a fee and a camera ban, but it is not an official source, so we are not quoting it. Ask at the gate and ask your driver for the road time on the day.

3. A sample half-day plan

  • Morning: Ghat boat ride at sunrise, then breakfast.
  • Late morning: Cross to Ramnagar, aiming to be at the gate by 11 AM.
  • Midday: Fort and museum, about 90 minutes to 2 hours.
  • Early afternoon: Lunch and return, leaving at least an hour of buffer before 5 PM closing for the return.

4. Boat or road

If you go by boat, agree on the return price and pickup point before you leave. If by car, remember that the old city's lanes bar big vehicles, so meet the driver at a main road point.

5. Season

November to February is the comfortable window. Incredible India lists Nov 10.8 to 32.9 °C and Jan 4.5 to 27.9 °C. Winter fog can disturb rail and flights, so keep this trip away from your departure day.
