Being vegetarian in Shillong does not mean surviving on biscuits. It does mean asking what is in the actual dish, not guessing from a rice bowl, a potato or a reassuring name. Khasi food deserves a proper introduction. Your dietary rules deserve a proper answer too.
Checked on 30 October 2026. This is an ingredient-and-ordering guide based on official tourism descriptions. It is not a verified restaurant list, a guarantee about a kitchen or an allergy-safety certification. No outlet's current menu, opening hours or access has been confirmed here.
Say what vegetarian means for your family
Before ordering, explain whether you avoid meat and fish only, also eggs, or also onion and garlic. If shared pans, utensils or cooking oil are not acceptable, say so separately. A dish without visible meat does not establish how its rice, gravy or chutney was prepared.
Useful English wording to show the server: "We do not eat meat, fish or eggs. Is this cooked without meat or fish stock, animal fat and fish chutney? Please check with the cook before we order." Adjust this to your actual diet. We have not invented a Khasi translation, because a confident wrong phrase is not helpful at lunchtime.
Jadoh is not automatically vegetarian rice
Meghalaya Tourism describes Jadoh as rice made with pork. A vegetarian adaptation may be offered somewhere, but the name alone is not evidence that today's version meets your diet. Ask what the rice was cooked with, not simply whether meat can be removed from the finished plate.
Ask: "Is the rice itself cooked only with water and vegetarian ingredients, or with meat, stock or animal fat?" If the answer is unclear, choose a different item whose ingredients the kitchen can explain. Picking pieces out is not the same as cooking a vegetarian meal.
A potato side can come with fish chutney
The official culinary guide describes Phan and Tungtap as potatoes with fermented dry-fish chutney. It also describes Ktung Bain Nei-Iong as dry fish cooked with black sesame. Neither "potato" nor "sesame" on its own tells you the whole dish.
Ask for the potato or vegetable preparation separately and check every accompaniment: "Does this chutney contain fish or meat? Can the plain potatoes be served without it, using clean serving utensils?" The kitchen's answer determines whether that order works. This guide cannot confirm separation at an unnamed stall.
Soybean and rice-cake names still need a recipe check
Meghalaya Tourism describes Tungrymbai as fermented soybeans cooked with black sesame. That description is a starting point for a question, not a vegetarian certificate for every version. Confirm added ingredients, fat and cooking method with the person preparing it.
The guide describes Putharo as steamed rice-flour flatbread, but the named pairing Putharo with Dohjem includes pork curry. It lists several rice snacks under Jingbam Dihsha, including Pu Maloi and Pu Sla, while Pu doh includes pork strips. Similar-looking rice snacks can have very different fillings or sides. Ask for the exact item and all accompaniments, rather than pointing to a plate and hoping.
Momos: check the filling and what comes beside them
Incredible India's Shillong food page describes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian momo options. Confirm the filling of the batch you are ordering, the chutney ingredients and whether a soup is being added. If shared steamers or utensils matter to you, ask before the order, not after it reaches the table.
"Vegetable" is an ingredient clue, not an answer about egg in dough, stock, sauces or cross-contact. We are not saying these are used in every momo. We are saying to ask the kitchen about your serving instead of turning a general food description into a guarantee.
Build a fallback meal before the day trip
For a family that wants familiar vegetarian food, ask the hotel what it can actually serve for breakfast, dinner and an early departure. Request a current menu and clarify whether plain rice, a confirmed vegetarian vegetable dish or another familiar option can be prepared for your dates. Those are requests, not promises that every property offers them.
If you need a strict vegetarian or Jain kitchen, confirm the kitchen and preparation rules directly. "Can make something veg" and "dedicated vegetarian kitchen" are different answers. Keep a suitable backup snack and avoid relying on a remote stop whose menu you have not checked.
A comfortable meal stop needs more than the right ingredients
For parents, ask about vehicle drop-off, steps to the dining room, seating, toilets and realistic meal timing. No named restaurant has been inspected for accessibility in this guide, so we will not label one senior-friendly from a photograph. Confirm the actual branch and route to the table.
Tell the driver the agreed meal stop before leaving. If the stop changes, repeat the food questions at the replacement. The previous restaurant's answer does not travel with you.
The short ordering checklist
- State your actual diet, including eggs or onion-garlic restrictions where relevant.
- Ask about the rice or base, stock, fat, sauce, filling and every side.
- Confirm separate preparation or utensils if that matters to you.
- Get the cook's answer before ordering when the server is unsure.
- Keep an acceptable fallback rather than accepting a vague reassurance.
For a Trip Keeper enquiry, share your diet and kitchen requirements when planning the trip, not when everyone is hungry in a car park. We can ask the useful questions early. "Vegetarian" should be a meal plan, not a daily surprise quiz.
