You can ask the operating airline for a vegetarian meal without fish sauce, but do not assume every domestic flight in Vietnam offers the same meal service or accepts an ingredient-level change. Confirm the flight, the meal product and the actual ingredients before relying on it for a parent. A menu photo or request code alone does not settle what will be served.

Start with the actual flight and product
Identify the operating airline, domestic route, departure date, cabin and booking reference. Ask whether this flight has a standard meal, a special-meal request service, a paid preorder or only snacks. If an agent booked it, ask who will submit the request and who will confirm the result. Do not apply Vietnam Airlines information to another operator.
A Vietnam Airlines announcement dated 23 July 2026 describes paid vegetarian preorders introduced from 15 July, including economy domestic departures from Ho Chi Minh City with a flight duration of at least one hour. The announcement excludes Hanoi departures from that product and describes ordering at least 24 hours ahead. This is a dated product example, not a promise of availability on every domestic sector or today's booking.
The airline's Special Meals page describes a separate request service with exclusions, while its paid vegetarian menu lists menu options. No visible revision date was established for those pages in this review. Use them as lookup leads and have the airline identify which product applies to the actual flight. Current availability, deadline, price and accepted customization remain unconfirmed here.
Describe the exclusions, not only “vegetarian”
Tell the airline what the traveller does and does not eat. Ask specifically about fish sauce, fish or seafood ingredients, shrimp paste, meat stock, animal fat and sauce packets, including ingredients mixed into rice, vegetables, dressings or marinades. Ask separately about egg and dairy if excluded. Do not assume “no visible meat” means the sauce was checked.
If the traveller needs Jain food, spell out their own restrictions, including onion, garlic and root vegetables as relevant. A vegan or vegetarian label is not a confirmation of those separate needs. If the concern is an allergy, say that plainly and seek the appropriate medical and airline advice; an ingredient preference and cross-contact precautions are not interchangeable.
Get an answer that matches the request
Ask which meal name or code has been recorded, which passenger and flight it belongs to and whether it is requested or accepted. Ask whether staff can verify the actual recipe and supplier ingredients, and whether a sauce is already mixed in. Removing a sauce cup does not remove ingredients already used in cooking.
A useful question is: “For this passenger and flight, can you confirm a meal with no fish, seafood, fish sauce, shrimp paste, meat stock or animal fat, including sauces and dressings? Please identify the actual meal and any ingredients you cannot verify.” Add the traveller's egg, dairy or Jain restrictions rather than silently assuming them. This is a suggested question, not a message already sent.
Plan for an unconfirmed or missing meal
If the provider cannot verify the ingredients, treat suitability as unconfirmed. Plan a meal before boarding and ask about any food the traveller wants to carry. Do not assume cabin-baggage, liquid, security or destination food-entry rules allow every backup. Confirm those separately through dated official sources for the actual journey.
After a flight or schedule change, ask whether the meal request still applies. On board, identify the request to crew and ask about the actual tray before eating. If the requested meal is missing or its ingredients cannot be checked, do not turn a verbal guess into a guarantee. Keep any receipt or request reference if following up on an undelivered paid product, without promising a refund.
Source check and limits
Reviewed 4 November 2026. The dated airline announcement supports only its described paid-product scope. The linked undated menu/service pages are lookup leads. This guide establishes no universal domestic-flight meal entitlement, current fare inclusion, fee, ingredient guarantee, allergy-safe environment or refund rule. Confirm the actual flight and meal with the operator.
