A set menu needs a confirmed replacement meal
At a Maldives resort with a limited set menu, ask the dining team what you will actually eat at each included meal. A note saying vegetarian requested is not the same as a confirmed replacement for the fish or meat course. Get the answer before paying for a non-refundable stay or meal plan, and repeat the check when you arrive.
Give the resort your actual exclusions
Say whether you avoid fish, seafood, meat stock, fish sauce, animal fat, eggs, gelatin or animal-derived cheese ingredients. Explain vegan or Jain requirements separately, including onion, garlic and roots if relevant to your family. Do not let a pescatarian option stand in for vegetarian. Tell the resort about a medical allergy separately and ask about cross-contact handling; this guide does not establish allergy safety.
Ask for the whole meal, not a garnish removed
Send the travel dates, number of diners and booked meal plan. Ask for a sample vegetarian version of the set menu: starter, main, sides, sauces, soup and dessert. Can the kitchen make a suitable main rather than remove the protein and leave the side dish? Ask which stock, paste, dressing and cooking fat are used, including ingredients prepared by suppliers. A coconut or vegetable description is not ingredient confirmation.
Confirm inclusion, choice and notice in writing
Ask whether the replacement is included in your particular rate, whether a supplement applies, which restaurant serves it and whether advance ordering or a reservation is needed. Check arrival-night dinner, early-departure breakfast and excursions separately. If the menu changes each day, ask how the kitchen will communicate the suitable choice. No universal notice period, free substitution, unlimited choice or kitchen availability is verified here.
Use local dish names as questions, not guarantees
Visit Maldives’ article dated 29 September 2022 distinguishes tuna-based mashuni from a pumpkin version and describes rihaakuru as tuna paste. These examples show why a familiar-looking accompaniment needs checking. They do not verify your resort’s recipe, menu or ability to change it. Ask the cook about the actual dish rather than treating a tourism description as a meal promise.
Make the handoff work at the resort
Keep the written response with your reservation and ask the arrival or dining team who owns the request. At the restaurant, confirm the diner, dish and exclusions before the meal is prepared. If staff changes, make sure the next team can find the agreed plan. Ask for a suitable backup if the planned ingredient or chef is unavailable. A booking agent’s note is not proof that the kitchen has accepted the request.
If the set menu cannot meet your needs
Ask about a confirmed simpler preparation or another suitable restaurant and the actual extra cost and reservation conditions. If you have not booked, compare a resort or rate with a clearer food plan rather than relying on a last-minute exception. Do not assume you can easily leave the property for dinner; ask about the actual alternative and transport arrangement. If already there, raise the gap with the dining manager and agree a specific meal, time and cost.
Source and limits
Reviewed 5 November 2026. The official Visit Maldives food article is dated 29 September 2022 and supplies the attributed ingredient examples above. It is not a current resort menu, guarantee of dietary accommodation or rate inclusion. Current dishes, prices, notice periods, availability and preparation arrangements remain unconfirmed until the actual resort answers for your stay.
