If the passport-number field on an issued visa sticker does not match the passport, ask the issuing country's visa authority to resolve the exact mismatch before relying on the document for departure. Start from the embassy, consulate or immigration authority's official website. Follow its route for the actual visa type and location, including an application centre only where that authority directs you.

Identify which number and record are wrong
Compare the field labelled passport or travel-document number with the passport's identity page. Do not assume a visa number, application reference or sticker serial is meant to match it. Record the field label, the value shown and the correct value. Check the name, nationality, birth date and validity fields too, so the authority receives one complete explanation.
Separate a printing error from a renewed passport, an old passport number used in the application, a wrong digital immigration record and an airline booking mismatch. These are different records. Changing passenger information with an airline does not establish that the issued visa has been corrected. This guide does not confirm that carrying two passports solves a genuine misprint.
Contact the authority through the right case route
Look for the issuing post's official instructions for visa errors or corrections. If the site names a visa application centre or official service portal, use that route and keep its reference. Ask who decides the correction and who only receives documents. Do not rely on an agent's claim that a small error is harmless or on a carrier's reassurance as a replacement for the issuing authority's answer.
As a country-specific lookup lead, the US State Department's visa FAQs point nonimmigrant visa holders with incorrect printed details to the nonimmigrant visa section at the issuing embassy or consulate. No visible publication date was established for that page in this review. It is not used here to prove a dated correction rule, processing time or permission to travel.
Send a precise request, not a public document dump
- Identify the visa type, issuing post, applicant and case/application reference through the official route.
- State the exact field, incorrect value and correct passport value.
- Explain whether the passport was renewed or the number was wrong from issue.
- Give the intended departure date and location of the passport.
- Ask what evidence to submit, whether the original passport is needed, who receives it, any fee, expected timing and what happens to the travel plan while unresolved.
Submit scans only through the verified official channel when requested. Do not post passport images in a public forum or send them to an unverified 'fast correction' account. Do not handwrite, peel, alter or digitally edit the visa to make it look corrected.
Do not import an old sticker-replacement process
A dated UK example shows why country and current route matter. UK Visas and Immigration's Examples of UK visa vignettes, updated 2 July 2026, records that vignettes are no longer issued from 1 July 2026. That limited statement does not decide how an individual existing sticker error will be handled.
The current GOV.UK travelling-to-the-UK page directs readers with a vignette error to check their eVisa and says a replacement vignette will not be provided. Its error route is a verification lead here, not a dated case-specific clearance. Do not assume an old blog's instruction to return a passport for a new sticker still applies. Ask which physical or digital record actually needs action in this case.
Verify the outcome and the remaining travel checks
Keep the dated reply and case reference. If a replacement or corrected digital record is issued, compare every relevant field with the actual travel passport again. A received complaint or courier receipt is not the corrected document. Check whether the response resolved only the print, the linked digital identity or both.
Then reconcile the travel passport details with the carrier booking through its own supported process. If the authority has not resolved the mismatch before departure, review postponement terms rather than assuming a screenshot, agent letter or verbal assurance will get the passenger through. No universal free correction, turnaround, refund, boarding or entry guarantee is established.
Source check and limits
Reviewed 4 November 2026. The dated UKVI publication supports only its stated end-of-vignette-issuance example. The official US FAQ and GOV.UK travel page are lookup leads whose visible publication dates were not established here. The correction route, documents, fee, time and permission to travel for an actual wrong-number visa remain unconfirmed until checked with the relevant authority. This is a contact-and-verification checklist, not a global visa-error rule.
Quick questions
Who should resolve a wrong passport number on a visa sticker? Start with the issuing authority’s official visa-error route for the actual country, visa type and applicant location.
Is the visa number supposed to match the passport number? Do not compare different fields. Identify the exact field label before deciding there is a mismatch.
Can changing the airline booking fix the visa? No visa correction is established by a booking edit. Reconcile the two records separately.
Can an agent alter the sticker or write the right number on it? Do not alter the document. Seek the issuing authority’s supported correction or verification route.
Will every error get a free replacement sticker quickly? No universal fee, replacement method or turnaround is confirmed. Current physical and digital routes differ.
Does a correction-request receipt mean the case is finished? No. Verify the authority’s response and actual corrected record, then check the remaining carrier details.
