A closed counter can mean you arrived before the airline's opening window. It can also mean you are looking at the wrong terminal, flight or counter. Establish which situation applies before settling down to wait.
Start with your actual flight
Compare the current booking with the airport screens: airline, flight number, departure date, destination and terminal. A nearby counter with the same airline logo need not be handling your flight. If the information is unclear, ask the airline's airport staff or the airport information desk where and when your flight will be accepted.
Opening time is not the check-in deadline
Air India's check-in FAQ says airport check-in generally opens three hours before departure and closes one hour before departure, while noting route and airport exceptions. The same FAQ gives a Delhi international-flight exception of 75 minutes before departure for counter closure. Treat these as Air India examples, not a universal timetable or an opening promise for every airport.
The opening window, the last time to check in, the baggage deadline and the boarding deadline are different. Ask for the relevant deadlines for your actual flight. Do not use the time printed as flight departure as your target for reaching the counter.
Make a waiting plan you can follow
Once staff confirm the correct counter and opening time, choose a waiting place from which you can return easily with your bags. Keep documents together and set a reminder early enough to get back. Continue watching the airport's current flight information and airline messages. A delay notice is not permission to ignore the original check-in deadline unless the airline confirms a revised one. Delhi Airport advises checking flight information directly with the airline because schedules can change.
Online check-in does not settle every counter task
If you have already checked in online, confirm whether you still need a bag drop or document check. Air India says some international travellers and domestic travellers connecting internationally may receive a confirmation slip rather than a boarding pass and need counter verification. Do not assume an online confirmation removes that visit. Source: Air India check-in FAQs.
If the expected opening time has passed or your deadline is approaching with no service, seek airline help immediately and state your flight number and departure time. Do not spend the remaining time silently waiting at an unstaffed desk. This is an early-counter troubleshooting guide, not a promise of late acceptance or rebooking.
