Quick questions

Do Indians need a visa for Germany?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa (visa C) before travel. Complete the German missions' VIDEX online form, print and sign it, then book a VFS Global appointment in India for documents and biometrics; the German Embassy in New Delhi and Consulates General in Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata decide. The fee is EUR 90 per adult and EUR 45 per child aged 6 to under 12, paid in INR, plus a VFS service charge. Processing is normally 15 calendar days and can extend to 45, so apply early - up to 6 months ahead. See our Germany visa guide for the full steps.

When is the best time to visit Germany?

Our month-by-month guide, built on DWD 1991-2020 station normals for Berlin, Munich, Hamburg and Frankfurt, rates May to September as recommended: mean temperatures of about 13 to 20 degrees and more than 200 hours of sunshine a month. December to February are cold (means of 1 to 3 degrees) with little sun, though Christmas-market season has its own magic. Rain falls in every month. See the best-time guide for city-level detail.

What money should I carry in Germany?

Germany uses the euro. Major credit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants and larger stores, but smaller businesses may prefer cash, so carry some euros with you. Service is usually included in the bill, and a tip of around 5 to 10 percent is customary. ATMs are widely available. The travel-essentials guide has the full money and forex checklist.

How do I fly to Germany from India?

Delhi and Frankfurt are linked by three nonstop flights a day - two on Air India and one on Lufthansa - in about nine hours. Lufthansa also flies nonstop from Mumbai to Frankfurt and from Bengaluru to Munich, with seasonal additions from Chennai and Hyderabad. One-stop options via Gulf hubs can cost less but take longer. Our flight-route guides compare timings and airlines in detail.

What should I pack for Germany?

Layers and a waterproof, because DWD station normals show rain in every month of the year. Add warm clothing for winter trips (January means run 0.9 to 2.3 degrees), comfortable walking shoes for castle and old-town sightseeing, a type F plug adapter (230 volts) and any regular medicines in original packs with a prescription. The travel-essentials guide has the season-by-season checklist.
