Netherlands from India: plan the trip

Content updated 1 Nov 2026 Facts last checked 1 Nov 2026

The Netherlands is one of the easiest first Europe trips for an Indian family: Amsterdam's canals and museums, tulip fields in spring, windmills, cheese markets and a country small enough to cross by train in a couple of hours. English works almost everywhere. This page brings the key details together in one place - the Schengen visa guide, the best months to go, and the packing and money essentials - with food, phrase, events and flight-route guides linked as they publish.

Quick questions

Do Indians need a visa for the Netherlands?

Yes. Indians apply for a Schengen visa through VFS Global centres across India. The fee is EUR 90 per adult, EUR 45 for children aged 6-11 and free under 6, plus the VFS service charge. You can apply up to 6 months before the trip and should apply at least 15 days before travel.

When is the best time to visit the Netherlands?

For tulips, mid-March to mid-May - Keukenhof gardens open 18 March to 9 May in 2027. September and October are mild and quieter, with golden light on the canals. December brings festive lights and ice rinks; winter is cold and grey but the museums are empty.

Is English enough in the Netherlands?

Yes. The Dutch speak English better than almost anyone in Europe - menus, stations, museums and shops all work in English. Learning Dank je wel (thank you) still earns a smile, and our phrase guide has the rest.

How do we get around with children?

Trains link every city - Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal takes about 15-20 minutes, and Utrecht, Rotterdam and The Hague are all under an hour. In cities, trams, metros and buses run on contactless check-in with a bank card. The Dutch cycle everywhere, but with small children, walking and trams are easier.
