Cambodia events and festivals guide for families

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

Cambodia has two big crowd events: Khmer New Year in mid-April (14-16 April 2026), when the country plays traditional games and splashes water, and the Bon Om Touk Water Festival in November (23-25 November 2026), with boat races on the Tonle Sap. Pchum Ben in October is the other nationwide holiday. Temples and tourist sights stay open through festivals; book transport and hotels early around New Year and the Water Festival.

April

The biggest festival of the year, marking the end of harvest season. Families clean homes, visit pagodas, and play traditional games; water-throwing and powder in the streets, especially in Siem Reap (Angkor Sangkran).

For families: Wonderful for families who enjoy crowds. Temples stay open; expect water fights near Pub Street and slower intercity travel - book buses and flights early.

Quick questions

Which Cambodian festival is best for families?

Khmer New Year (14-16 April) is the most playful: traditional games, dancing and friendly water fights, with the biggest celebrations around Siem Reap. For spectacle, the Water Festival boat races (23-25 November 2026) on the Phnom Penh riverfront are unforgettable, though the crowds are dense.

What is Pchum Ben?

A Buddhist ancestors' festival: over about 15 days, families offer food to monks at pagodas to honour deceased relatives, ending in a three-day public holiday (10-12 October 2026). It is reflective rather than festive; visitors can respectfully join a pagoda visit.

Do shops and sights close during Cambodian festivals?

Temples and major tourist sights stay open through festivals. Government offices and banks close on public holidays, and around Khmer New Year many families leave the cities, so some small shops shut - but tourist areas keep running. Book intercity transport early around New Year and the Water Festival.

When is the Water Festival 2026?

23-25 November 2026, confirmed by Cambodia's official holiday decree. The date follows the lunar calendar and moves each year; the main action is the longboat races on the Tonle Sap riverfront in Phnom Penh, with smaller celebrations in Siem Reap.

Is Khmer New Year like Songkran?

Very similar: Cambodia, Thailand and Laos all celebrate the April new year with water-splashing, temple visits and family gatherings. In Cambodia the three days (14-16 April 2026) also mean traditional games and offerings at pagodas, with big organised celebrations around Angkor.
