Sri Lanka events and festivals guide for families

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

Sri Lanka's festival calendar is Buddhist, Hindu and shared at once. The big family-friendly spectacles are the Kandy Esala Perahera (July-August), with torch-lit dancers and elephants, and the Duruthu Perahera near Colombo in January. Vesak in May turns the whole island into a lantern-lit celebration with free food stalls (dansal), the Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April is a joyful home festival, and Deepavali lights up Tamil neighbourhoods. Sights stay open through festivals; book Kandy hotels months ahead for the Perahera.

January

Duruthu Perahera

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, near Colombo Typical timing

Usually Around the Duruthu full moon (22 Jan 2027); exact 2027 dates not yet announced by the temple.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Kelaniya temple's grand procession honours the Buddha's first visit to Sri Lanka: dancers, drummers, torch-bearers and decorated elephants over several nights, ending on the Duruthu full moon.

For families: The easiest big perahera for families based in Colombo - an evening out, not a trip. Crowds grow late; keep children close and carry water.

April

Sinhala and Tamil New Year (Aluth Avurudda)

Nationwide Dates confirmed for 2027

13 Apr 2027 to 14 Apr 2027 · Dates from timeanddate.com, checked 30 Oct 2026

The island's shared new year: families light the hearth at the astrologically set hour, exchange kiribath (milk rice) and sweets, visit relatives, and villages hold games and festivals.

For families: A warm home festival rather than a street spectacle. Tourist services run, but many city shops close for a few days as people travel home - stock up and enjoy the quiet.

Event website

May

Vesak

Nationwide Typical timing

Usually May full moon; 2027 dates not yet announced. Vesak usually falls in early-mid May.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

The holiest Buddhist festival, marking the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing. Streets fill with lanterns and pandals, temples hold prayers, and volunteers run dansal - free food and drink stalls for everyone.

For families: Magical for families: drive or walk the lantern streets after dark and accept a dansal snack. Alcohol and meat sales pause on Vesak days; dress modestly at temples.

June

Poson

Anuradhapura and Mihintale Typical timing

Usually June full moon; 2027 dates not yet announced. Poson usually falls in early-mid June.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Marks the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka: pilgrims in white climb Mihintale at dawn, and Anuradhapura's stupas glow with lights. Second only to Vesak in devotion.

For families: Pair with the Cultural Triangle if your dates fit. Dawn at Mihintale is unforgettable but crowded and steep - best for older children.

Event website

July

Kandy Esala Perahera

Kandy Typical timing

Usually July-August, ending on the Esala full moon; 2027 dates not yet announced.. This is the usual time of year, not confirmed dates for a particular year.

Asia's grandest pageant: ten nights of whip-crackers, fire dancers, drummers and silk-robed elephants escorting the Sacred Tooth Relic through Kandy's streets, growing bigger each night.

For families: The one event worth planning a trip around. Book Kandy hotels and grandstand seats months ahead; the final nights are long, loud and packed - carry snacks and ear protection for small children.

November

Deepavali

Nationwide, especially Colombo, Jaffna and hill-country Tamil towns Dates confirmed for 2026

8 Nov 2026 · Dates from timeanddate.com, checked 30 Oct 2026

The Tamil festival of lights: homes and Hindu temples glow with oil lamps, families wear new clothes and share sweets. Colombo's Wellawatte and the Jaffna peninsula celebrate the biggest.

For families: Lovely evening temple visits with children; sweets everywhere. Travels normally, though some Tamil-owned shops close for the day.

Quick questions

Which Sri Lankan festival is best for families?

The Kandy Esala Perahera (July-August) is the spectacular one - torch-lit dancers, drummers and elephants through Kandy's streets. Vesak in May is the gentle magic: lantern-lit streets and free food stalls (dansal) everywhere. Both keep sights open and are easy to enjoy with children.

What are dansal?

Free food and drink stalls that Sri Lankan families and businesses set up during Vesak as an act of generosity. Everyone is welcome - queue up with your children for ice cream, tea or a meal; refusing is fine but accepting with both hands and a smile is the polite way.

Do things close during Sri Lankan festivals?

Tourist sights and hotels stay open. On poya (full moon) days and Vesak, alcohol and meat sales pause nationwide, and during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year many city shops close for a few days as families travel home. Plan shopping around mid-April.

When is the Kandy Esala Perahera 2027?

The dates are announced by the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and were not yet announced when this guide was last checked. It always runs ten nights ending on the Esala full moon in July or August - book Kandy hotels well ahead once dates publish.

Can tourists watch the peraheras?

Yes - both the Kandy Esala Perahera and Kelaniya's Duruthu Perahera welcome visitors. You can stand along the route for free or buy grandstand seats for comfort. Dress modestly, stay behind the barriers, and keep children close in the dense final-night crowds.
