Delhi to Bhutan: Flight route

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

Two airlines fly nonstop from Delhi to Paro - Drukair and Bhutan Airlines - in 2 hours 20 minutes, over 1,221 km. Paro is Bhutan's only international airport, a steep Himalayan valley strip about 1.5 hours by road from Thimphu. Indians need no visa for Bhutan - an entry permit issued on arrival against a passport or original voter ID is enough - and Bhutan is just 30 minutes ahead of India (UTC+6), so there is no jet lag.

Layovers

At 2 hours 20 minutes nonstop, a layover never makes sense on this route - Drukair and Bhutan Airlines both fly it direct from Delhi. The worthwhile alternative is not a connection at all: many Indian families enter Bhutan by road through Phuentsholing (opposite Jaigaon, West Bengal), collecting the entry permit at the border - handy when combining Bhutan with Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Sikkim. Paro is the only international airport; there are no international flights to other Bhutanese towns.

When to book

Compare Drukair and Bhutan Airlines on this route - both fly Delhi to Paro nonstop and fares move independently. Book well ahead for the spring tshechu season (March-April) and the clear autumn months (October-November), when the small Paro-bound fleet sells out. Every family member still needs a passport (6 months validity) or an original voter ID for the entry permit - see our Bhutan visa guide for the full document rules and the SDF daily fee.

For parents and seniors

A gentle 2-hour-20-minute hop with no real time change. The Paro approach is famous - a dramatic descent between mountains, flown only by specially certified pilots; it is safe but windows-down spectacular, so warn nervous flyers to expect terrain close by. Ask for wheelchair assistance at booking, and pre-arrange the hotel pickup for the 1-1.5 hour mountain drive to Thimphu.

Quick questions

Which airlines fly nonstop from Delhi to Bhutan?

Two: Drukair (the national carrier) and Bhutan Airlines, both nonstop from Delhi to Paro (PBH) in 2 hours 20 minutes, according to FlightsFrom schedule data.

How long is the flight from Delhi to Paro?

2 hours 20 minutes nonstop over 1,221 km - barely longer than a domestic Indian sector.

Do Indian passports need a visa for Bhutan?

No visa. Indians receive an entry permit on arrival at Paro airport (or at the Phuentsholing land border) against a passport valid for 6 months or an original voter ID card; children under 18 can use a birth certificate with a guardian. Bhutan charges a Sustainable Development Fee of INR 1,200 per person per night - our Bhutan visa guide covers the full rules.

What is the time difference between India and Bhutan?

Bhutan is 30 minutes ahead of India (BTT, UTC+6) all year - Bhutan does not use daylight saving. No jet lag; just set your watch forward half an hour.

How do I get from Paro airport to Thimphu?

Paro International is about 50 km from Thimphu, a 1-1.5 hour drive along a good mountain highway. Almost every hotel arranges airport pickups, and your licensed guide or driver typically meets you at arrivals.

Can we enter Bhutan by road instead of flying?

Yes - Indians can enter through Phuentsholing, opposite Jaigaon in West Bengal, collecting the entry permit at the border office. It pairs well with Darjeeling, Kalimpong or Sikkim, but budget a full extra day: Phuentsholing to Thimphu is about 5-6 hours by road.
