Delhi to the United Kingdom: Flight route

Written by The Trip Keeper team Content updated 30 Oct 2026 Facts last checked 30 Oct 2026
The short answer

Three airlines fly nonstop from Delhi to London Heathrow - Air India, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic - in about 9 to 9 and a half hours. That is one of the best-served long-haul routes from India, with several nonstops a day, so timings are flexible. One-stop options via the Gulf (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha) or Istanbul add choice and can be cheaper. The UK is 4 hours 30 minutes behind India in summer (BST) and 5 hours 30 minutes behind in winter (GMT).

Layovers

With three nonstop airlines on Delhi-London, a nonstop is usually the right answer - total journey about 9 to 9.5 hours versus 12 to 15 via a hub. Choose a Gulf or Istanbul one-stop mainly for price or to land at a regional UK airport (Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh) without a separate UK domestic hop. On westbound nonstops you leave India morning or afternoon and land the same day; on the return you usually leave London morning or evening and land in Delhi the next morning or day.

When to book

Delhi-London is one of India's best-served long-haul routes with several nonstops a day across Air India, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Book early for the June-August school-holiday peak and the December festive season, when nonstop fares climb sharply.

For parents and seniors

The nonstop at about 9 to 9.5 hours is the kindest option for parents: no transit walking, and Heathrow has good wheelchair assistance if requested at booking. Pick a daytime arrival in London where possible, and pre-book the Heathrow Express or a car to the hotel - the Underground with luggage and jet lag is hard work.

Quick questions

Which airlines fly nonstop from Delhi to London?

Three airlines: Air India, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic, all into London Heathrow. Between them there are several nonstops a day, taking about 9 to 9.5 hours. IndiGo also flies nonstop from Delhi to Manchester.

How long is the flight from Delhi to London?

About 9 to 9.5 hours nonstop. One-stop routings via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul take roughly 12 to 15 hours depending on the layover.

Do Indian passports need a visa for the UK?

Yes - Indians need a Standard Visitor visa applied for in advance (there is no visa on arrival). See our UK visa guide for the documents, fees and processing times.

What is the time difference between India and the UK?

The UK is 4 hours 30 minutes behind India during British Summer Time (late March to late October) and 5 hours 30 minutes behind in winter (GMT). When it is noon in Delhi in summer, it is 7:30 AM in London.

Which London airport should I fly into?

Heathrow for almost everyone: it has all the India nonstops, the fastest links to central London (Heathrow Express, Elizabeth line, Underground) and the most onward connections. Gatwick is the second airport, used by some one-stop routings.

Is a one-stop flight via the Gulf worth it?

Usually only for price or for landing at a regional UK city like Manchester, Birmingham or Edinburgh. The nonstop saves 3 to 5 hours each way, which matters with children or parents. In peak season, though, Gulf carriers can be meaningfully cheaper.
