Hokkaido with parents is a gift: Sapporo is flat, gridded and calm by Japanese standards, and its best day trip is a half-hour train ride. This three-day plan keeps walking gentle, lunches long and evenings early - exactly how the island rewards you.

Day 1: Sapporo, softly

Land at New Chitose and take the JR Rapid Airport to Sapporo Station - 37 minutes, 1,150 yen, station in the terminal basement (our airport transfer guide has the details). Check in near Sapporo Station or Odori, then keep the afternoon light: Odori Park's flat promenade, the underground Aurora Town and Pole Town shopping arcades (a blessing in rain or snow), and an early dinner of soup curry or miso ramen.

Day 2: Otaru Canal without the rush

After a slow breakfast, ride the JR Hakodate Main Line from Sapporo to Otaru - rapid trains take about 30 to 34 minutes for 750 to 800 yen one way (japan-guide and ekinavi; both covered by the JR Pass). Otaru is a Meiji-era port whose stone banks and warehouses now line a canal made for strolling. Walk the canal path to the glass workshops on Sakaimachi street, stop for the town's famous sushi at lunch, and ride back by mid-afternoon. Total walking is gentle and flat; benches line the canal. Some JR trains also run direct from New Chitose Airport to Otaru in about 70 minutes, so airport-to-Otaru transfers are possible too.

Day 3: one anchor, one view

Keep day three flexible. Morning anchor: the Sapporo Beer Museum, Japan's only beer museum, in a handsome 1876-era brick complex. Official details: open 11:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30, closed December 31), self-guided visit 1,000 yen for adults and free for elementary-age and under, with an elevator serving every floor for strollers and tired knees. Evening option: the Mt Moiwa ropeway and mini cable car to the summit for one of Japan's celebrated night views - 2,100 yen round trip, cars every 15 minutes, last ascent 21:30 (mt-moiwa.jp). If legs or weather say no, the Tanukikoji covered arcade fills the evening instead.

Pacing notes for parents

One sight before lunch, one after, dinner by 18:30. Sapporo's subway stations have elevators, taxis are plentiful for short hops, and winter pavements get icy - rubber-soled shoes for everyone. Vegetarian parents should read the dashi warnings in our Japan food guides before ordering noodles. Coming from Tokyo? The Tokyo to Sapporo route guide compares flying, rail and the ferry.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Is Otaru easy with elderly parents?

Very. The JR Hakodate Main Line rapid from Sapporo takes about 30 to 34 minutes and costs 750 to 800 yen one way (japan-guide and ekinavi; JR Pass covered). The canal path is flat with benches along it, and the glass shops of Sakaimachi street are made for slow strolling. Have the town's famous sushi for lunch and head back mid-afternoon. Some JR trains also run direct from New Chitose Airport to Otaru in about 70 minutes.

What can seniors do in Sapporo itself?

Stroll flat Odori Park, use the underground Aurora Town and Pole Town arcades when it rains or snows, and visit the Sapporo Beer Museum - official details: open 11:00 to 18:00 (last entry 17:30, closed December 31), self-guided visit 1,000 yen for adults and free for elementary-age and under, with an elevator serving every floor. In the evening, the Mt Moiwa ropeway runs every 15 minutes to the summit night view for 2,100 yen round trip, last ascent 21:30 (mt-moiwa.jp).

How should I pace Hokkaido with parents?

One sight before lunch, one after, dinner by 18:30. Keep a single Sapporo base near Sapporo Station or Odori so nobody repacks. Subway stations have elevators, taxis are plentiful for short hops, and winter pavements get icy - rubber-soled shoes for everyone. The only day trip you need is Otaru; everything else stays inside flat, compact Sapporo.
