Jorhat rewards slow travel. The Jorhat District tourism pages describe a city with the world's oldest tea research centre, colonial buildings, maidams and a gibbon sanctuary nearby. For parents, the trick is not to squeeze all of it in. Here is a three-day plan with one main outing a day and a long rest in the middle.

Day 1: arrive, settle, one short stop

Keep day one light. Check in, eat early and rest. If energy is left, visit Tocklai Tea Research Institute on the southeast edge of the city. The district page says it is the world's largest and oldest tea research centre, founded in 1911, with a tea museum and a model tea factory showing the machines that turn leaves into tea. Call ahead to confirm visiting days and timings before you go, since the page does not list them.

Day 2: Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in the morning

Established in 1997, the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary protects the western hoolock gibbon, India's only ape species, according to the district's tourism newsletter. It also shelters macaques, langurs and slow lorises. Go in the morning, take water, and agree the return time with your driver. Entry rules and timings belong to the forest department, so confirm them locally. The Lachit Borphukan Maidam is listed about 8 km from the sanctuary, so you can pair the two if parents are keen, and skip it if they are not.

Day 3: a heritage stop and an easy exit

The Dhekiakhowa Bornamghar is a naamghar in Jorhat district established by the saint-reformer Madhavdeva, per the district site. It is a quiet, short visit, and it suits the last morning before an afternoon departure. Leave a buffer for the airport or station. Do not stack a long outing on the day you travel.

How to keep it comfortable

  • One outing per day, back at the hotel by early afternoon.
  • A private cab with a driver who accepts frequent stops.
  • Footwear for uneven ground at the sanctuary and the museum.
  • Water, a cap and any regular medicines in the day bag.

Before you go

Confirm opening days for each stop, ask your hotel about the road and weather that week, and keep the Majuli river island and Sivasagar for a separate, longer trip. This plan uses the Jorhat District tourism pages and newsletters checked on 30 October 2026. It is a pacing guide, not a booking, and timings change.
