- The pace rule
- One sight per half-day, rest between
Osaka is kinder to older legs than Tokyo: the city is compact, the food comes to you, and the best experiences are short and seated. The mistake is running it at guidebook pace. This three-day plan does one sight per half-day with real rest built in, based out of Namba so the evenings stay flat and walkable.
Day 1: Namba, Kuromon and the canal at dusk
Check in, nap if the flight was long, then start with Kuromon Ichiba market in the late morning: a covered arcade where lunch is a slow graze of grilled scallops, tamagoyaki and fruit, with shop stools to sit on between bites. Walk it one way, fifteen easy minutes. Evening is Dotonbori, but seen the senior-friendly way: arrive at 17:30 before the dinner rush, photograph the Glico sign from Ebisubashi bridge, then sit down for the 20-minute Tombori River Cruise, which departs every 30 minutes between 11:00 and 21:00 from Tazaemonbashi Pier (web reservations open until 10 minutes before departure). Dinner at a counter with proper chairs, not a standing bar, and back to the hotel by 21:00.
Day 2: Osaka Castle, without the climb
The castle grounds are a park first and a sight second, which suits a slow morning. The museum tower opens 9:00 to 18:00 (last admission 17:30, closed December 28 to January 1) and costs 1,200 yen for adults, free for ages 15 and under. Crucially, the main tower is barrier-free with elevators inside, and the official access map marks a step-free route from the park entrance through Sakuramon Gate, flagging the steep sections so you can skirt them. Do the tower, sit under the trees with vending-machine tea, and head back by early afternoon. Evening optional: Shinsekai's Tsutenkaku tower area for an early dinner of kushikatsu, a flat grid of streets with plenty of seated restaurants.
Day 3: Sumiyoshi Taisha and an easy finish
Sumiyoshi Taisha is Osaka's most atmospheric shrine and mercifully flat: free entry, grounds open 6:00 to 17:00 from April to September and 6:30 to 17:00 from October to March. Go before 9:00 for the arched Sorihashi bridge without crowds (the bridge itself is steep; the rest of the grounds are level, so those who skip the bridge lose nothing). The Nankai line from Namba reaches it in about 10 minutes, the same line that runs to the airport. Spend the afternoon on packing, a department-store food hall in Namba, or a sento-style rest, then a final Dotonbori dinner.
Practical notes for parents
Base in Namba, full stop: the airport connection is direct (34 to 50 minutes, covered in our Kansai airport to Namba guide), and evenings need no trains. Carry the hotel's address card in Japanese for taxi rides. Temples and markets mean shoes on and off, so pack easy slip-ons. If this pace reads well, the matching Tokyo vs Osaka family comparison explains why we steered you here, and the Delhi to Osaka route guide sorts the flights.
