AI illustration: fictional parents plan at home with a child. The generic laptop screen is not IRCTC, a ticket or an actual fare quote.
When creating a family train booking, enter the child’s correct age and make the separate-berth choice deliberately. “Travels free” does not mean “gets a free berth”, and a child fare does not automatically buy separate accommodation. This guide covers adding the child while making an ordinary reserved booking. It is not a method to add a new passenger to an already-issued PNR.
Under five: separate berth or no separate berth?
The Ministry of Railways clarification dated 17 August 2022, referring to a 6 March 2020 circular, says children under five travel free if no separate berth or chair-car seat is claimed. If a separate berth/seat is voluntarily requested, full adult fare is charged. This is a dated rule source, not a newly announced 2026 change.
The current IRCTC Rail Connect Android guide, inspected 27 October 2026, supports the distinction in its passenger screen: page 18 shows “Add Infant With Berth” and “Add Infant Without Berth”, plus a note that under-five travel is free and no ticket purchase is required if no separate berth is opted. Its illustrated journey is a sample, not a current fare or availability quote.
Five to under twelve: the berth choice affects fare
South Eastern Railway’s Entitlement of Children page, labelled last reviewed 14 September 2022, says full adult fare is charged for a child aged five and under twelve when a berth/seat in reserved class is sought at reservation. Without a berth/seat, it says half adult fare applies subject to the minimum distance for charging, with specified additional charges separately levied.
Indian Express’s 10 November 2025 explanation corroborates the age and berth distinction. Neither source means the final checkout total must be exactly half of an adult’s all-in total. Read the actual fare breakdown, train and quota conditions before paying.
Follow the correct passenger-entry route
In the official Android guide, pages 18–21, Add New is the passenger route for those above four years. The Add New screen asks for name, age, gender, berth preference, food choice and nationality. The separate infant-without-berth screen asks for the infant’s name, age and gender and shows “Ticket is not to be issued”. Use the route that matches the child and the accommodation choice, rather than entering a false age to fit another option.
For example, a four-year-old without a separate berth belongs in the under-five/no-berth choice shown in the guide. Wanting a separate berth for that same child is a different choice with a different fare consequence under the dated Ministry clarification. An eight-year-old needs the child’s own accurate passenger entry; no-berth and berth-requested are different fare decisions, not a spelling variation of the same ticket.
Review every child entry before payment
The guide’s Review Journey page asks travellers to review train, date, route, class, availability, passenger details, payment mode and convenience fee. Our check is to read each child’s name and age, the chosen berth option, and the amount shown before paying. Do not copy the guide’s sample passenger, date or displayed fee.
The IRCTC terms do not guarantee the seat or berth of your choice. Paying a fare that requests accommodation is not a promise of a particular berth location or adjacent family seats. Read the actual booking status and allocation after purchase.
Do not turn a special product into a general rule
The IRCTC-operated trains document has its own child provision for the named Tejas services: children aged five and above are booked at full fare and given a seat. That is why this article is not an all-trains discount chart. Special products and quotas need their own terms checked.
If the actual train or reservation screen does not offer the expected no-berth choice, stop and confirm with IRCTC before paying. Do not assume a generic age table overrides that product’s conditions.
If the booking already exists
This walkthrough concerns the passenger list before a new booking is completed. It does not establish that a child can be inserted into an issued PNR through these buttons. Check the existing record and ask IRCTC about the child’s actual journey and accommodation need instead of treating the new-booking screen as a post-booking amendment tool.
Sources and scope
Official IRCTC Android guide and terms checked 27 October 2026. Fare rules are attributed to the dated Ministry clarification and SER page, corroborated by the November 2025 report. No new 2026 policy, exact ticket price, post-booking addition facility, guaranteed berth or all-trains fare claim is made.
