If an airline schedule change puts a parent and child on different flights, treat it as an itinerary problem, not a seat-selection problem. Before confirming a replacement, ask the airline or the original ticket issuer to review both passengers together. A shared destination or booking reference is not enough: compare the flight number, operating airline, departure date and time on every sector.
First check whether they are actually on different aircraft
Put the old tickets and both new itineraries side by side. Check each passenger's name, airports, local dates, flight numbers and operating airline. Different codeshare flight numbers can refer to the same operated service; ask the airline to confirm if that is unclear. Different travel dates or different operating flights need correction, even if the destination matches. Do not mistake an unassigned seat for a different flight.
Ask for one workable plan for the adult and child
Give the airline or issuing agent both ticket numbers, all booking references, the child's age and the original schedule-change notice. Say: "This child is travelling with this adult. The proposed replacement flights separate them. Please check an alternative that keeps them together on every sector, and confirm the operating flights before reissue." If booked separately, provide both references; do not assume the records are linked.
This is a request for a suitable correction, not a promise that a particular alternative has seats or that every airline offers the same waiver. Air India's dated Schedule Change and IRROPS Policy, 29 May 2025, V5 describes re-accommodation and ticket reissue procedures, including the role of the booking source. Ask the issuer to confirm which policy applies to your ticket now, whether a waiver applies and any remaining payment before you agree. The policy does not establish a universal guarantee that all family members will receive the exact flight they request.
Do not accidentally turn this into unaccompanied travel
Air India's official children FAQ, checked 4 November 2026, says children below five cannot travel alone and must have a parent, legal guardian or authorised adult. It also says infants must be booked in the same cabin and fare type as their accompanying adult on every sector. These are Air India statements, not rules we apply to every carrier.
For older children, do not assume a schedule change automatically activates an unaccompanied-minor service. Air India says its service is for Air India-operated flights, not codeshares, and does not extend to connections with a sector operated by another airline. If you are considering the child travelling without the original adult, speak to the operating airline first about age, eligibility, documents, acceptance and charges. Until that is explicitly arranged, do not treat the split itinerary as a plan to travel.
Be careful with a one-click rebooking link
Air India's self-service re-accommodation FAQ says eligible disrupted travellers receive a link and an updated itinerary receipt after rebooking. It also states that the facility can be used only once. Before completing that flow, check that it handles both passengers and every affected connection together. If it shows only one passenger or leaves the family split, ask for help rather than completing it and assuming a second change will be available.
Check the result, not only the support message
- Both passengers have the intended operating flight, date and airport on every sector.
- The updated ticket or itinerary receipt is available for each passenger, and the airline confirms the ticket is valid for the new flights.
- Seat requests, child/infant details, meals and any assistance are rechecked. Being on the same flight and having adjacent seats are separate questions.
- Pickup, accommodation and anyone meeting the family have the corrected arrival details.
If departure is close, use the airline's current official support channel or airport staff and keep both passengers' documents together. Do not cancel one ticket or buy another merely to make the screens look consistent without understanding the old ticket's position.
TripKeeper's journal also covers a voluntary date change for one IndiGo passenger. This article is different: the goal is to prevent an airline-initiated change from separating an accompanied child and adult.
Sources and limits
Official sources checked 4 November 2026: Air India schedule-change policy, dated 29 May 2025; Air India children FAQ; Air India self-service re-accommodation FAQ. The web FAQs show no policy revision date in the text reviewed; the check date is not an effective date. Other airlines' rights and charges are unconfirmed here.
