"We are not leaving the airport" is not a complete visa check. An airside transit visa and permission to cross arrival immigration are different questions. Before buying a connection, establish which question applies to each traveller, which official rule covers the passport and whether an exemption actually fits the documents in hand.
First, establish the route rather than the label
Write down the exact arrival and departure airports, terminals, local dates, flight numbers and operating airlines. Ask the airline where the onward boarding pass and baggage are handed over, whether the transfer stays airside, and whether an overnight closure, hotel or airport change affects that route. A single booking reference, cabin baggage only or a short connection does not itself prove visa exemption. Check outward and return travel separately.
A dated UK example: airside can still need permission
The UK carrier guidance updated3August2026 places India in its visa-required-to-enter-or-transit list. Its airside transit-without-visa section has both journey conditions and a list of qualifying documents. It requires arrival and departure by air, a confirmed onward flight from the same airport on the same day and the correct destination documents, alongside an applicable exemption document. This is a UK example, not a worldwide same-day rule.
Read the complete qualifying-document branch. The guidance includes specific visa and residence-permit types, validity and issue-date conditions, and restrictions on verifying other countries' electronic documents. An ordinary tourist visa must not be substituted for a named residence permit or category D visa. A destination visa is not automatically a transit exemption. If the actual document does not clearly fit, eligibility is unconfirmed; ask the responsible authority rather than relying on a fare-search badge.
Do not reuse the airside exception for a landside journey. The UK guidance has a separate landside section with different conditions. An airline can clarify the physical transfer and check-in documents, but it cannot create an immigration exemption that the official rules do not provide.
Do not book from an old country list
Germany illustrates why the source date matters. The German missions in India's 2June2026notice says the airport-transit-visa requirement for Indian nationals was lifted effective3June2026. The older January2026announcement described an intended future change, not that implementation. This change concerns airport transit; do not infer permission to enter Germany or take an itinerary requiring entry from it.
Singapore illustrates a different distinction. ICA's transit guidance updated27October2026 defines transit as travel to another country without clearing Singapore arrival immigration and says there are no specific requirements for that transit. Collecting an onward pass or baggage through immigration is entry instead. These examples cannot be combined into one worldwide checklist of countries that are always safe for every Indian passport holder.
Keep a private decision record before payment
- Passport nationality and document type, plus the travel dates and exact route.
- The official page, its visible publication/revision date and the rule that applies to that route.
- The actual exemption document, its category and validity, not just the country that issued it.
- The airline's confirmed airside/baggage/pass route and any unresolved question.
Do not post passport or visa numbers in public comments. If a dated official rule cannot be found, say the point is unconfirmed. Resolve it before committing to a non-refundable connection, or compare another route after checking its own requirements. Do not assume a future visa will be approved in time.
When the itinerary changes
Repeat the check if the airport, terminal route, local travel date, overnight arrangement, operating airline or document changes. A reroute offered by an airline is not proof that the passenger now meets the new country's requirements. Ask about a workable alternative and the booking's change/cancellation terms before authorising a paid action.
How TripKeeper approaches it
For family planning, we map the transfer and permission questions before comparing the headline fare. Keep the rule and exemption evidence beside the actual itinerary so another family member can follow the decision. TripKeeper can help organise those checks and compare routes without promising visa approval, boarding, entry or a universal minimum connection time.
