Short answer: before you leave for the station, look up your train on NTES (Indian Railways' National Train Enquiry System) for the right date, not only in the printed or app timetable. A timetable is the plan. NTES shows what one particular run of that train is doing.
What "instance" means. The same train number runs again every day or week it is scheduled. Each of those is a separate run. On the NTES "Spot Your Train" page, the options are labelled as train instances and journey station basis, so you choose the specific run and the station you care about.
The date trap on overnight trains. The date to enter is the date the train left its origin station, which is not always the date you board. For a train that started yesterday and reaches your station after midnight, the right run may be yesterday's. Pick the wrong one and you may read the status of a different run of the same train.
Read your station, not the end of the line. Look at the line for your boarding station: scheduled time, expected time and the latest position. A train that is late at an earlier station can recover or slip further, so treat the figure as a guide.
Times can change. NTES itself notes on its page that data marked with an asterisk is dynamic and may change. Do not treat an expected arrival as a promise. Check again close to departure, and still allow yourself the time you would have given a normal run.
What this does not replace. It does not replace your ticket status. If you still need to confirm a seat, our guide on checking PNR status covers that. NTES is for where the train is, not whether you have a berth.
A simple routine. Open NTES, choose Spot Your Train, enter the train, pick the run by its start date, look at your boarding station, note the marked changeable times, and check again an hour or two before you leave.
