Yes. Low-cost airlines sell checked baggage as an optional add-on, and you can normally add it after booking - through the airline's website or call centre up to a cutoff before departure, or, subject to check-in deadlines and the airline's acceptance rules, at the airport at airport rates. IndiGo, for example, lets you book pre-paid excess baggage up to 2 hours before scheduled departure.
Adding baggage after you have booked
On IndiGo, pre-paid excess baggage can be booked up to 2 hours before the scheduled departure via its website or call centre. For pre-paid excess on international connecting flights, the cutoff is earlier: at least 6 hours before departure, and you must show the relevant international travel documents at check-in or airport rates apply. One more limit: IndiGo says excess or additional baggage for codeshare passengers can only be added at the check-in counter.
These add-ons are formally optional extras - IndiGo's page describes them as unbundled add-on services under DGCA's Air Transport Circular 04 of 2026, meaning the ticket can be booked without them and they carry an additional charge. IndiGo also notes the product is non-cancellable and non-refundable in isolation - so add only what you are sure you need.
What it costs on IndiGo right now
From IndiGo's current fees and charges page (checked 26 October 2026):
- Domestic pre-paid excess weight: slabs from 3 kg at INR 2,250 up to 40 kg at INR 30,000. The airport rate is INR 800 per kg - so compare the price of the smallest pre-paid slab that covers your actual excess against the airport per-kg charge for that weight. At 3 kg, that is INR 2,250 pre-paid versus INR 2,400 at the airport; for only 1-2 kg, where no smaller pre-paid slab exists, the airport rate can cost less.
- Lite Fare: includes no free checked baggage at all. Adding the 15 kg, 1-piece bag costs INR 2,000 domestic and INR 3,500 international - and IndiGo lists the same price whether you pre-book or pay at the airport. Weight beyond the purchased 15 kg is charged at excess rates.
- International connecting flights: pre-paid slabs of 8 kg, 15 kg and 30 kg at INR 7,000, INR 12,500 and INR 25,000 respectively.
So "booking ahead is cheaper" depends on how much weight you need, and it does not hold universally - the Lite Fare bag costs the same at the airport on IndiGo's current rates. Check the airline's live fee page before deciding where to pay.
Booked through a third party or as separate tickets
If your trip was booked through a third party or as separate tickets, the add-on route runs airline by airline. Air India Express's self-transfer guidance says you can add luggage by selecting the relevant option for each airline separately, and if an option is not available during booking, you may be able to add it directly through the airline after booking. Each airline sets its own allowance and weight limits, so if you add different limits on different flights, pack to the lower one.
If you wait until the airport
Airport purchase is the fallback, not the plan - and it stays subject to the airline's check-in deadlines and baggage acceptance rules, so the counter is not a guaranteed last-minute purchase. IndiGo's Lite Fare terms warn that if you arrive with checked baggage - or an overweight cabin bag - without having added it, applicable charges will be levied, and airport per-kg rates apply to excess weight. At the counter you also lose the pre-paid slabs, and on codeshares the counter is the only place you can add baggage at all.
Quick questions
Can I add checked baggage after booking a low-cost airline ticket? Yes - low-cost carriers sell baggage as an optional add-on. IndiGo lets you book pre-paid excess baggage via its website or call centre up to 2 hours before scheduled departure (6 hours for international connecting pre-paid), and airport purchase at airport rates is the fallback, subject to check-in deadlines and baggage acceptance. Codeshare passengers can only add at the check-in counter.
Is it cheaper to add baggage online than at the airport? It depends on how much you need: compare the smallest pre-paid slab that covers your excess against the airport per-kg charge for that weight. On IndiGo's current rates, at 3 kg that is INR 2,250 pre-paid versus 3 x INR 800 = INR 2,400 at the airport - while for just 1-2 kg the airport rate can cost less, since pre-paid starts at 3 kg. IndiGo's Lite Fare 15 kg bag is listed at the same INR 2,000 domestic whether pre-booked or paid at the airport. Check the airline's live fee page.
How late can I add baggage before my flight? On IndiGo, pre-paid excess baggage can be booked up to 2 hours before scheduled departure via website or call centre; pre-paid excess for international connecting flights must be booked at least 6 hours before. After those cutoffs, you pay airport rates at the counter, subject to check-in deadlines and the airline's baggage acceptance.
What if I booked through a travel site or have separate tickets? Add the baggage with each airline directly. Air India Express advises that if a luggage option is unavailable during booking, you may be able to add it through the airline after booking - each airline sets its own allowance, so pack to the lowest limit you bought.
Can I cancel a baggage add-on if my plans change? IndiGo states its excess and additional baggage product is non-cancellable and non-refundable in isolation. Treat the add-on as final when you buy it, and check your own airline's terms.
