You arrive at the station and the nearest gate is not the one you usually take - or it opens onto a different platform from your train's. Can you still use it? The short answer: Indian Railways checks your ticket, not your gate. Here is what the rulebook actually says.
What the rulebook checks at the gate
Chapter III of the Indian Railways Commercial Manual (rule 301) says that, as a rule, bona fide passengers holding proper tickets or other authority should be admitted to station platforms. The manual's stated condition for entry is your ticket. It does not settle which entrances at a given station are open or allowed - that is decided locally. So use a locally designated, open entry point and follow the directions of the gate staff.
Use an entry gate, not an exit
One thing to watch at big stations: in a March 2017 reply in Parliament (PIB), the Railway Ministry said stations have separate entry and exit points, manned by commercial staff and RPF/GRP at major stations. That is a 2017 report, so let the signage at your station be the current word: look for the point marked for entry. The entry/exit designation is the station's local rule, so if you walk in through an exit, gate staff can send you back to the correct side.
Reaching your platform from the other side
If your gate puts you on the wrong platform, use the station's authorised route across - the foot overbridge or subway where one is provided. The Commercial Manual (rule 303) does not permit crossing railway lines without adequate safety precautions; where there is no bridge or subway, follow the route and safety guidance given by station staff rather than finding your own way across. At a large station the bridge walk can take several minutes, so a different entrance mainly costs you time - plan for it.

Quick questions
Do I have to enter from the main gate? The Commercial Manual (rule 301) makes a valid ticket the condition, as a rule, for being admitted to platforms. It does not settle which entrances at your station are currently open or allowed - use a locally designated, open entry point and follow the gate staff's directions.
Can I cross the tracks straight to my platform? No. Use the authorised route - the overbridge or subway where the station provides one, and elsewhere the route station staff approve. The Commercial Manual (rule 303) does not permit crossing the tracks without adequate safety precautions.
My gate is on the far side from my train. What now? Use the authorised route shown on the station's signage, and ask station staff if you are unsure of the way. Check the platform-number boards as you enter and keep a few extra minutes for the walk.
What if I need to enter without travelling? Per rule 302 of the Commercial Manual, at stations that issue platform tickets, a non-traveller needs a platform ticket or pass to go to the platform.
