If your coach’s air-conditioning stops working, start with help for the journey, then preserve the evidence needed for a possible fare claim. A service complaint and an IRCTC e-ticket refund claim are different tasks. Submitting one does not establish that you completed the other.

First ask for help where you are

Our practical first step is to tell the TTE or available onboard railway staff the train number, coach, berth and what happened. Ask them to check the fault and explain the next step for your coach. Note when you first noticed the problem and the affected stretch. Do not try to repair electrical equipment, open a moving train’s door for air, or move into someone else’s berth without staff guidance.

If anyone needs medical assistance, say so immediately rather than treating it only as a comfort complaint. The RailMadad homepage, checked 27 October 2026, lists 139 for security/medical assistance. This article does not diagnose symptoms or promise a repair, replacement coach, relocation or response time.

Use the complaint route for the service problem

The Digital India description of RailMadad says train complaints can be linked to a PNR and incident date, or a train number with UTS details. It also describes tracking a lodged complaint with its reference number. Keep the acknowledgement/reference so you can identify the same issue when following up.

Our suggested complaint record is factual: train and journey date, coach/berth, when the AC stopped, the affected part of the journey, and whom you informed. Keep any response. If you add a photograph, avoid exposing other passengers’ faces, tickets, phone numbers or identity details. A photo or complaint reference alone is not the original TTE certificate required by the refund rule below.

This is not a screen-by-screen RailMadad tutorial. Use the current complaint options shown to you rather than relying on an invented category name.

For an IRCTC e-ticket, ask about the journey certificate

Section9 of the currently hosted IRCTC Refund Rules and TDR Filing PDF, titled RefundCancellationRules_19-01-2026, addresses failure to provide air-conditioning for a portion of the journey. It requires the original certificate (GC/EFT) issued by ticket-checking staff (TTE) at the time of journey for the e-ticket claim. Ask the TTE about this while travelling; do not assume you can replace it later with your own description.

Before handing over an original, our record-keeping suggestion is to retain a clear copy and the complaint/TDR reference. Use the actual train, affected journey and certificate details. Do not choose an unrelated reason just because it has a longer filing period.

The AC-failure deadline is not a generic cancellation deadline

For an e-ticket AC-failure claim, Section9 and the PDF’s AC Failure TDR table say the online TDR must be filed within twenty hours of the train’s actual arrival at the passenger’s destination. The anchor is actual arrival at your destination, not the train’s final terminus when that is different. File promptly instead of using the last minute as a plan.

The official IRCTC Android guide shows File TDR as a journey-related process: review the ticket details, select passengers and choose the reason. Check the actual claim screen and entered facts before submission. This article concerns an IRCTC e-ticket AC-failure claim, not an ordinary cancellation, an i-ticket/counter-ticket process or a corporate-train contract.

The original certificate must also reach IRCTC

The same current PDF says refund will be processed through TDR only after the original certificate is received. For this e-ticket process it gives the postal destination:

Group General Manager/IT
Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation Limited
2nd Floor, Tower-D, World Trade Centre
Nauroji Nagar, New Delhi - 110029.

Read the current official instructions again before posting, including any details the claim screen requests. Keep proof of posting/delivery for your own records. Filing online alone does not satisfy the PDF’s original-certificate requirement. This article does not invent a separate postal deadline.

What amount does the rule describe?

Section9 describes a fare difference for the affected portion, not an automatic full-ticket refund. Its categories are AC first class versus first class; AC II/III-tier versus sleeper class (Mail/Express); AC chair car versus second class (Mail/Express); and executive class versus first-class Mail/Express fare for the relevant section. Do not treat this list as a quoted amount for your train.

The PDF says the concerned Zonal Railway decides acceptance/rejection and the amount under railway refund rules. IRCTC forwards the claim and credits the payment account after receiving the railway’s refund. No fixed approval time or amount is promised here. If your product or class is not clearly covered, ask IRCTC about that exact ticket rather than borrowing a different category.

Keep service help and the claim separate

While on board, ask staff for help and for the relevant certificate. For an e-ticket claim, preserve the certificate, file the correct online TDR within the stated actual-arrival window and follow the original-document instructions. Track the service complaint with its own reference. Do not assume a RailMadad acknowledgement replaces a TDR or guarantees money back.

Sources checked 27 October 2026. The IRCTC PDF carries a 2015 effective-rules heading and a 19 January 2026 document title; it is cited as the currently hosted instructions, not as a claim that every clause was newly made in 2026.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Does a RailMadad complaint automatically obtain the AC-failure refund?

No. The service complaint and e-ticket claim are separate. The current IRCTC refund PDF requires the correct online TDR and receipt of the original journey TTE certificate (GC/EFT).

What is the IRCTC e-ticket AC-failure TDR deadline?

The current refund PDF says within twenty hours of actual train arrival at the passenger’s destination. Do not substitute a generic cancellation deadline or the final terminus when it is different.

Is this an automatic full-ticket refund?

No. Section9 describes a fare difference for the affected portion for specified classes. The concerned Zonal Railway decides acceptance and amount; no repair time, approval time or full refund is promised.
