Can Indian travellers change their trip dates after receiving a UK visitor visa?

Yes. The dates you wrote in the application were intentions, not commitments - what binds you is the visa itself: its start date, its expiry, and the six-month maximum stay per visit. Travel any time inside that window, for the same purpose, without telling anyone. What you cannot do is arrive before the visa starts or stay past its expiry. Here is how to check your window and what to fix when plans move.

Short answer: yes, freely - inside the visa's validity window. A UK Standard Visitor visa is issued with a start date and an expiry date, and the dates you listed in the application are treated as your intended plan, not a locked itinerary. If your trip moves by weeks or even months, you do not need to inform UKVI or apply again, as long as you travel within the visa's validity and for the same purpose you were granted.

What actually binds you: three dates, none of them your flight. One, the visa start date - you cannot enter the UK before it. Two, the visa expiry date - your permission to be in the UK ends there. Three, the six-month maximum stay per visit on a Standard Visitor visa. Any arrival and departure that fits inside these is fine, whether it matches the application or not.

Where to check your window now. Most Indian applicants now hold an eVisa: log into your UKVI account and confirm the visa details and dates before you book anything new - the Home Office itself instructs travellers to check that their UKVI account and eVisa details are correct before travel, and to report errors online. If you have an older vignette sticker in your passport, it remains valid for travel until it expires.

Moving dates earlier. The only hard wall is the start date. If your visa starts on the 20th and your new plan lands on the 18th, you cannot travel - no exceptions at the border. Either move the plan back inside the window or, if the trip must happen earlier, apply for a new visa with enough processing time. This is the one scenario where "changing dates" turns into "new application."

Moving dates later. Easier, with one caution: the expiry. A six-month multi-entry visa lets you visit more than once within its life, so a postponed trip often simply happens later on the same visa. But if the new dates push your stay past the expiry, the visa no longer covers the trip and a fresh application is needed. Check the new return date against the expiry, not just the outbound.

Keep the story consistent at the border. The officer on arrival can still ask about your plans. New dates are fine; a new purpose is not. If the application said two weeks of tourism in London and you now arrive for a three-month stay with different bookings, expect questions. Carry bookings that match what you will actually do, and if family or funds sponsored the original application, keep that evidence current.

Practical tidy-up when dates move. Rebook hotels and flights to the new dates, refresh travel insurance so it covers the actual travel period, and check that your UKVI account shows your current passport if you renewed it since applying. None of this is permission-seeking - it is keeping the paperwork honest for the officer who may glance at it.

How we see it at TripKeeper. When we plan a UK trip, the bookings, insurance and itinerary are built to survive a date change - and if the plan moves past the visa window, we tell you before the border officer does. Send us a trip-planning inquiry and travel with the paperwork already thought through.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Can I travel to the UK on different dates than I wrote in my visa application?

Yes. The application dates are your intended plan, not a lock. You can travel on any dates inside your visa's validity window - after its start date, before its expiry, and within the six-month maximum stay per visit - for the same purpose you were granted. No need to inform UKVI for a simple date change.

What happens if my new travel date is before my UK visa start date?

You cannot travel. The start date is a hard wall - you will not be boarded or admitted before it. Move your plan inside the window, or if the trip must happen earlier, apply for a new visa with enough processing time before the new date.

My UK trip is postponed by two months. Do I need a new visa?

Usually not. Check the visa's expiry date: if your new trip - including the return - fits inside the validity window and the six-month stay limit, the same visa covers it. If the postponed dates run past the expiry, you need a fresh application.

Do I need to update anything after changing my UK travel dates?

No permission is needed, but tidy the paperwork: rebook hotels and flights to the real dates, refresh travel insurance for the actual period, and make sure your UKVI account shows your current passport. At the border, your bookings should match the story you tell.

Can the UK border officer question my changed dates?

They can ask about your plans on arrival, and changed dates alone are unremarkable. What draws questions is a changed purpose or a stay far longer than the original application suggested. Carry bookings that match what you will actually do and answer honestly.

Is the UK vignette sticker still valid if my eVisa has different dates?

The vignette remains valid for travel until it expires. If you notice an error on the vignette, check your eVisa - if the same error appears there, report it online through your UKVI account before you travel, per gov.uk guidance.
