The short answer
Do not assume you can add the IRCTC booking-linked cover to an issued ticket. The official IRCTC terms describe the optional facility at the time of booking. A nomination link received later is not a fresh purchase of cover. A current post-booking add-on route or exception was not confirmed in this review.
What the source does and does not establish
The IRCTC Optional Travel Insurance terms, section B.3, say the facility is provided at booking. Section B.6 separately describes filling nomination details after booking. The PDF has no visible overall issue date in its text; its premium clause alone has an effective date of 17 February 2024. We attribute those statements to that document, not to a dated confirmation that every part of today's booking screen or policy is unchanged. Do not treat a premium-clause date as a date for the whole contract.
First check whether cover already exists
Keep the issued ticket, passenger list, booking receipt and any insurer email or SMS together. Read the actual insurance selection and charge, then match any policy number and schedule to the passengers and journey. If a charge exists but the policy is missing, ask the named insurer to trace issuance before buying anything else. A payment receipt or support case by itself does not settle coverage.
Nomination is a different task
If an insurer has sent a nomination route, verify the insurer and policy through its official channel before entering personal details. Ask what information is needed and retain the acknowledgement. Do not assume that adding a nominee creates a policy, activates omitted cover or changes the passengers insured.
If insurance was not selected
Ask IRCTC about the actual booking and whether a supported amendment exists. Record the answer and reference. If considering a separate policy, ask that insurer to confirm eligibility, start time, covered journey, exclusions and price before paying. A separate product is a separate contract, not an amendment to the PNR. Its suitability for your family remains unconfirmed until its own terms are checked.
Do not cancel a useful ticket just to chase cover
This guide does not recommend cancellation and rebooking. First understand any cancellation cost, new seat availability and whether the proposed insurance actually meets the need. A fresh booking is not a promise of the same berth, fare or insurance outcome. Do not make a second payment while the first policy or charge is still unresolved.
A handover for parents
Write down the PNR, traveller names, insurer and policy number if issued, official assistance route and a family contact. Keep a readable offline copy of the actual policy schedule. Do not hand over account passwords or publish identity documents in a chat group. If something happens, use the insurer's actual policy instructions; this article does not confirm eligibility, claim deadlines or payment.
Sources and limits
The dated PIB release of 11 December 2019 describes the optional scheme as it existed then. Its old premium and insurer list are not current buying advice. The IRCTC terms are useful for distinguishing booking from later nomination, but the document's overall currency and any present exception remain unconfirmed. Check the contract offered for your own journey.
