An overseas mobile number is a reason to check IRCTC's international-user verification route, not to invent an Indian number. First get the correct account verified, then check the quota, passenger details and payment conditions for the actual train. A working login is not a ticket.
What the available official guidance establishes
IRCTC currently hosts a Foreign User Registration guide describing an ISD mobile field other than 91, email verification, a payment stage for some international/NRI registrations and foreign-mobile OTP verification. The guide is undated. We have not established a dated current primary rule confirming today's fee, exact screen sequence or OTP delivery to every overseas network; those details remain unconfirmed here. Treat the guide as a route to check against the live service, not a guaranteed walkthrough.
A Ministry of Railways release dated 15 December 2017 records an online Foreign Tourist/NRI scheme that used international mobile numbers. It is historical evidence, not proof that its old classes, fares, booking windows or payment restrictions still apply. We do not reuse those old numbers as current booking advice.
Use the existing account where possible
If you already have an account, establish which user ID owns the bookings before changing anything. Check the country/ISD code, mobile digits and email shown in the official profile or recovery flow. Use truthful residence and contact details that you control. Do not replace them with a borrowed number merely because a domestic-looking form is easier to complete.
IRCTC's hosted Foreign Tourist Quota guide, also undated, describes updating and verifying the international mobile number for existing foreign/NRI users. Whether your specific account currently needs that step must be checked in its live flow. Recover access before creating another account or paying again.
If verification does not complete
Record which stage failed: email code, registration payment, mobile code, login or ticket payment. Check the exact ISD code and number shown, whether your own network can receive the message, and any retry instruction on the official page. Keep the error and time privately. Do not assume repeated payment, repeated account creation or a borrowed phone will solve an OTP problem.
If money was debited, check the transaction and account state before attempting another payment. Use the help or contact route reached from the official IRCTC service for that error. Never give a caller your password, complete card details or authentication code. If the issue remains unresolved, leave time for an authorized alternative rather than building a tight family connection around an unverified account.
Account verification is not quota eligibility
Decide which booking route you actually need. Do not assume that living abroad forces every journey into Foreign Tourist Quota, or that an overseas number grants eligibility for every quota. The hosted quota guide describes passport and booking conditions, but is not a dated current guarantee for your train. Check the available route, each passenger's required documents and current conditions in the booking flow. Tatkal or other authentication requirements need a separate check; an international-number login alone does not settle them.
Finish with the issued booking, not the payment screen
Before paying, review train, date, boarding station, passengers, status, quota, class, final total and cancellation terms. If payment appears successful, reopen booked-ticket history and check whether a ticket was actually issued. Keep the PNR, passenger-by-passenger status and usable ticket document. A bank debit, OTP or account-verification message is not a substitute for that result.
For parents travelling in India while the booking person is abroad, test that the parent or companion can open the actual ticket and has the required identity documents. Keep a reachable booking contact, pickup plan and a backup if verification or ticket issue remains incomplete. Avoid sharing login credentials as the family handover.
Review and TripKeeper planning note
Reviewed 4 November 2026. Current account fees, exact UI steps, overseas OTP delivery and quota availability remain unconfirmed without the live account and booking check. The dated 2017 release and the undated hosted guides serve different purposes and should not be merged into one current rule. TripKeeper planning starts account access early, then confirms the issued train booking before arranging the next handoff.
