Short answer: yes, you can now. Indian Railways changed the rule from 1 April 2026: passengers holding confirmed or RAC tickets can change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train's scheduled departure from its origin station - which means even after the first reservation chart (prepared about four hours before departure) is out. The only boundary is that the request must go in before the second chart is prepared. The old rule - no changes within 24 hours of departure - no longer applies.
What changed on 1 April 2026. Under the earlier system, boarding point changes closed 24 hours before departure, so by the time the chart was prepared, the option was long gone. The new rule, announced by the Railway Minister as part of the '52 Reforms in 52 Weeks' initiative, lets a passenger who cannot reach the original station pick a more convenient station on the train's route and board from there without losing a confirmed seat. It is designed exactly for the family situation everyone knows: the train starts from a far station in the city, and boarding from the nearer one saves an hour of road travel.
The conditions that still apply. Eligibility: only confirmed and RAC tickets - waitlisted tickets are not covered. The change is allowed only once per ticket, so choose carefully. Once changed, the passenger loses all rights to board from the original station - showing up there instead means paying fare plus penalty for the difference. The boarding point must be a station on the train's route. And a few exclusions carry over: tickets booked under the VIKALP option, current bookings, and seized tickets cannot be changed.
How to do it online. The steps on IRCTC: log in, go to My Account, then My Transactions, then Booked Ticket History. Select the ticket and press Change Boarding Point. A pop-up lists the stations on the train's route - pick the new one and confirm. A success message appears, and an SMS confirming the new boarding point goes to the mobile number used at booking. For counter (PRS) tickets, the same change is done at a railway reservation counter with the ticket and a valid ID.
Practical cautions for families. Do not cut it to the final 30 minutes - websites lag on busy travel days, and the second chart timing varies by train; making the change a few hours ahead is far safer. After the change, re-check the platform and coach position for the new station, since halts and platform assignments differ. And brief the parent clearly: once the boarding point is changed to station B, the train cannot be boarded at station A at all - the TTE's list now expects them at B.
