Short answer: yes, and Air India has a named service for it. Fly Prior lets a confirmed-ticket passenger move to an earlier Air India flight departing within 12 hours before the originally booked one - same calendar date, same route, same cabin, subject to a seat being available. The catch that surprises people: it is sold only at the airport, at the ticketing office or check-in counter, with you physically present. There is no app button for this. Fees are ₹2,599 all-in for flights between the eight metro Zone 1 airports and ₹1,799 all-in for Zone 2 sectors, whatever the cabin class.
How it works at the airport. Reach the departure airport, walk to any check-in counter for your cabin or the airport ticketing office, and ask for Fly Prior. The agent checks the earlier flights that day on your route - within the 12-hour window - and whether a seat is open in your cabin. If yes, you pay, and you are moved onto the earlier flight on the spot. The service is limited-inventory and first-come-first-served, so the traveller who asks at 6 AM gets the seat the one at 9 AM does not. Even web-checked-in passengers can use it - the counter handles the change.
The fine print that matters. Fly Prior is domestic-only - travel within India. No cabin changes, no route changes, no date changes: it moves you earlier on the exact sector you booked, nothing else. It is not available for group bookings, unaccompanied minors, or redemption tickets bought with miles. The fee is non-refundable even if you then miss the earlier flight - a real reason to switch only when you are genuinely at the airport and ready. Maharaja Club Gold and Platinum members get the fee waived in the same cabin.
What happens to your add-ons. Pre-paid excess baggage and priority services transfer to the earlier flight. Preferred seat selection, special meals and lounges do not - seat fees are tied to the original flight and are not refunded if the earlier flight has no paid-seat option left. So if you paid ₹600 for a window seat, Fly Prior quietly costs the fee plus that seat money. Worth knowing before you decide the earlier flight is 'only' ₹1,799.
When it is worth it, when it is not. Fly Prior shines for the classic Indian travel day: the meeting ended early, the wedding got over, the train reached the city at noon instead of 6 PM. A ₹1,799-2,599 switch beats five hours at the gate. It makes less sense when the fare difference logic says otherwise - if your original ticket is flexible or the flight is far off, a regular reschedule through Manage Booking (change fee plus fare difference, done online) may cost the same and works from home. Fly Prior is the airport-day tool; rescheduling is the plan-ahead tool.
How TripKeeper uses this. On our trips, when a day finishes early, having someone who knows these counters exist turns dead airport hours into an extra evening at home or at the destination. If you would like that kind of handling behind your travel, send us a trip-planning inquiry.
