For a Chennai trip whose main destination is Jaffna, check a direct Chennai-Jaffna flight first. Flying to Colombo and travelling north is a different journey, with airport exit, a ground transfer and a separate long-distance leg. Compare the complete chain rather than the first flight price.
Checked on 30 October 2026. The direct route is supported by primary airport and airline pages, but those pages disagree on clock times. No date-specific ticket price, remaining seat or guaranteed departure is quoted here.
Direct flight: a real route, conflicting public times
Jaffna International Airport's official schedule lists IndiGo 6E1177 from Chennai to Jaffna and 6E1178 in the reverse direction as daily services. Its displayed outward time is 10:30-11:45. IndiGo's own Jaffna destination page lists the same flight number but shows 13:55-15:10 with an effective date of 1 September 2024.
Do not choose whichever timetable suits your hotel check-in. These are conflicting public pages, not a resolved travel-date schedule. Search the airline for the actual date, confirm the operating flight, local departure and arrival, and use the final ticket and later airline updates for the journey. A "daily" route table does not establish a seat for every date.
India and Sri Lanka both use UTC+05:30 on the checked date, so these differing published clock times are not explained by a time-zone conversion. Jaffna's airport is at Palaly; flying into Jaffna does not mean landing at your city hotel. Confirm the onward pickup and hotel entrance separately.
Via Colombo: separate the airport from the railway station
If Colombo is part of the trip, or the direct flight does not work for your date, compare Chennai-Colombo plus the whole northbound journey. Bandaranaike International Airport is at Katunayake, not Colombo Fort railway station. The airport's transport page lists onward ground-transport information; it does not establish a through flight-and-train connection.
Sri Lanka Railways' official reservation site lists Colombo Fort-Jaffna as a reservable corridor. That supports checking a rail option, not assuming a particular departure after your flight. Its separate schedule service requires stations and a date. A dated timetable and seat result could not be verified during this check, so no train number, duration, fare or same-day connection is presented as current.
Allow for immigration, baggage, airport exit, the actual station transfer, reporting and the risk of a delayed flight. An independently bought railway ticket is not an airline-protected connection. If the verified train does not leave enough margin, compare an overnight stop or a different route instead of building a tight connection from guessed times.
A road option is not an airport transfer price
For a Colombo-airport-to-Jaffna road journey, request a quote for the full route and party, luggage, breaks, vehicle type, air-conditioning, any tolls and driver arrangements. Confirm the final total and cancellation terms. No current whole-journey road time or fare was verified here, so a short airport taxi tariff must not be reused as the northbound price.
For parents or children, count the time spent sitting, meal stops and the arrival hour, not only the number of transport changes. A direct flight with a confirmed final pickup can remove the Colombo transfer chain, but suitability still depends on the actual schedule, fare and traveller needs.
The ferry is a different port-to-port plan
The High Commission of India's 18 September 2026 release confirms continued support for the Nagapattinam-Kankesanthurai passenger ferry service. Those are the named ports; the release is not a Chennai departure timetable, a live sailing confirmation or a statement that the service operates in all weather.
A March 2026 report in The Hindu described a resumption after weather-related suspension. That dated report must not become an October or November sailing promise. A ferry plan needs Chennai-to-Nagapattinam travel, port reporting, current sailing and weather confirmation, immigration, and Kankesanthurai-to-hotel transport. No current sailing, fare, baggage entitlement or cancellation policy was established. Do not treat a ferry plus surface travel as a through train from Chennai to Jaffna.
Entry permission still matters on the shorter flight
Sri Lanka's official ETA portal states that, effective 25 May 2026, Indian nationals are among those eligible for a free 30-day tourist ETA under the stated scheme. The same notice requires ETA before arrival, including for the listed nationalities. "Free" is not "no application". Check the current notice, passport-specific eligibility and entry requirements before buying travel; this article is not an approval of any individual's admission.
Compare the final journey before paying
- Direct: dated flight and fare rules, bags, airport reporting, Palaly pickup and hotel approach.
- Via Colombo: flight plus airport-to-station or road handoff, verified northbound service, meals, any overnight stay and arrival pickup.
- Ferry: travel to the correct Indian port, current sailing, reporting, weather risk, baggage and Sri Lankan port pickup.
Compare totals in their quoted currencies with taxes and fees. Keep the baggage and change/cancellation conditions beside the fare. Route existence is a starting point, not permission to combine unrelated schedules into one guaranteed itinerary.

The railway schedule page's service description was readable, but its interactive dated form did not load during the check. No journey, seat or pickup was booked.
