Da Nang is one of the easier Vietnamese cities for vegetarian travellers, thanks to the Buddhist com chay tradition: vegetarian rice restaurants that run all over the city. The trick is knowing the system and two phrases, because Vietnamese menus hide fish sauce in places Indian vegetarians do not expect.

The phrase that matters

"Khong co thit" means no meat, but many kitchens hear it as no red meat and happily add fish sauce or shrimp paste. The phrase that works is "an chay": eating Buddhist vegetarian, understood as fully plant-based. Learn it, screenshot it, say it before ordering anything.

Com chay: the Buddhist buffet system

Com chay restaurants are self-service counters of 6 to 12 vegetable, tofu and mock-meat dishes over rice. The mock meats (tofu, wheat gluten, mushrooms) are a point of pride and genuinely convincing. The Vietnam Guides' 2026 city guide names reliable ones: Hoa Nghiem on Yen Bai Street (25,000 to 45,000 VND a plate, 10 to 12 dishes), Lien Hoa near the Han River (25,000 to 40,000), the An Lac chain (20,000 to 35,000), and the more polished Chay Garden (40,000 to 100,000 a dish). These places get busiest on the 1st and 15th of the lunar month, when observant Buddhists eat vegetarian; the food is at its widest then too.

Safe dishes anywhere

  • Pho chay: vegetable-broth pho with tofu and mushrooms, 30,000 to 50,000 VND.
  • Banh mi chay: tofu and pickled vegetable baguette, 15,000 to 25,000 VND.
  • Bo bia chay: fresh spring rolls with jicama and carrot, 20,000 to 35,000 VND.
  • Mi Quang chay: the central Vietnam turmeric noodle dish in its vegetarian version, 30,000 to 50,000 VND.

Near My Khe Beach

The An Thuong beach neighbourhood has a growing international cafe scene. The same guide lists Vegan Life Da Nang (dedicated vegan, 60,000 to 120,000 VND), Nen Kitchen (Vietnamese home cooking with clearly labelled plant-based dishes, 50,000 to 120,000), and the Cong Ca Phe chain whose coconut coffee is naturally vegan (30,000 to 50,000).

For Jain and strict vegetarians

Say "an chay" and add "khong trung" (no egg) if needed. Mock meats are safe; the risk is sauces. At com chay buffets everything on the counter is vegetarian by definition, which is why they are the least stressful meal of the day.

Balance the food days with our 3-day Da Nang itinerary, keep the costs in line with the Da Nang budget guide, and the Vietnam travel guide covers the rest.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Is it easy to find vegetarian food in Da Nang?

Yes. Buddhist com chay (vegetarian rice) restaurants operate all over the city at 20,000 to 45,000 VND a plate. When ordering anywhere, say an chay; khong co thit (no meat) can still come with fish sauce.

What is the hidden risk for vegetarians in Vietnamese food?

Fish sauce (nuoc mam) and shrimp paste. Many cooks add them even to dishes ordered without meat. Saying an chay (Buddhist vegetarian) is understood as fully plant-based and avoids the problem.

Which vegetarian restaurants in Da Nang are reliable?

Per The Vietnam Guides 2026 city guide: Hoa Nghiem on Yen Bai Street (25,000-45,000 VND), Lien Hoa near the Han River (25,000-40,000), the An Lac chain (20,000-35,000), and Vegan Life Da Nang near My Khe Beach (60,000-120,000).
