Almaty is one of the easiest Central Asian trips from India: two airlines fly direct from Delhi in about three and a half hours, Indians enter Kazakhstan visa-free for 14 days, and the airport is 25 minutes from the city. The only real decision is which direct flight to take and whether a one-stop itinerary saves enough money to matter. Details below from airline schedules and Kazakhstan's official migration service, checked 31 October 2026.
The direct flights: the way to go
IndiGo flies Delhi to Almaty daily - 6E 1801 departs 06:05 and lands 09:00, an early arrival that gifts you a full first day (flightmapper.net schedule data). Air Astana's KC 908 runs six days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday) at 11:35, arriving 14:30 local time - the comfortable option if you hate 4 AM alarms. Both take about 3:30-3:40 in the air. Direct fares on Indian booking sites typically start in the low Rs 20,000s one-way, dipping to around Rs 18,000 in sales on some carriers (ixigo fare listings, 31 October 2026).
One-stop options: when they make sense
The main one-stop routings are Uzbekistan Airways or Centrum Air via Tashkent, flydubai via Dubai, and Air Arabia via Sharjah. These can undercut direct fares - Centrum Air showed from around Rs 17,800-18,600 one-way on ixigo's listings - but add 3-8 hours of layover, which on a 3.5-hour route is a poor trade unless the saving is large or you want a Tashkent stopover. Check baggage rules carefully on the Central Asian budget carriers: the cheapest fares often exclude checked bags, and winter travellers carry more.
Why no train or road combination works
The map tempts people: Almaty sits just beyond the Karakoram. In practice there is no Delhi-Almaty train (no rail link crosses between India and Central Asia), and the overland route would mean crossing Pakistan and China - the Khunjerab Pass into Xinjiang, then Khorgas into Kazakhstan - with a China transit visa, restricted-border permits, seasonal closures and roughly 3,000+ km of driving. It is an expedition, not a holiday transfer. For an Indian family trip, fly.
Entry formalities and practicalities
Kazakhstan's official migration service lists India as visa-free: 14 days per entry, up to 42 days within any 180-day period (dos-immigration.kz, 2026 list). Carry your return ticket and hotel booking; registration for short tourist stays is handled by hotels. The tenge runs about Rs 0.21 (1 INR about 4.8 tenge, Wise mid-market, October 2026), cards work widely in Almaty, and winter (November-March) is ski season at Shymbulak, so book flights 6-8 weeks ahead for December-February. Once you land, official airport taxis and Yandex Go cover the last 25 minutes into town.
