Delhi to Osaka: flight, train and road combinations that actually make sense

There is no direct Delhi to Osaka flight, so the route needs a decision: one stop into Kansai, or a direct Delhi-Tokyo flight plus the shinkansen. Here is how the combinations compare.

Osaka is Japan's kitchen and the gateway to Kyoto and Nara, but it has one planning wrinkle for Indian travellers: no airline flies direct from Delhi to Osaka's Kansai airport (KIX). Every route is a combination. Three of them actually make sense, and the right one depends on whether Tokyo is also on your list.

Option 1: one-stop straight into Kansai

If Osaka, Kyoto and Nara are the whole trip, fly one-stop into KIX and skip Tokyo entirely. FlightConnections currently lists the fastest one-stop patterns via Hanoi at about 8 hours 25 minutes total and Taipei at about 8 hours 30, with Shanghai and Guangzhou close behind; Google Flights' live bookable results typically show fastest options around 10 hours 20 minutes once real schedules and layovers apply. Vietnam (VietJet, Vietnam Airlines via Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City), Taiwan (via Taipei) and mainland Chinese hubs tend to price lowest; Cathay via Hong Kong and Thai via Bangkok are the comfortable middle. KIX sits about 50 minutes from Shin-Osaka station and 75 minutes from Kyoto Station, so a KIX arrival doubles as a Kyoto arrival.

Option 2: direct Delhi-Tokyo, then the shinkansen

If Tokyo is also on the list, this is the cleanest pattern. Delhi to Tokyo has direct flights on JAL, ANA and Air India at roughly eight hours, laid out in our Delhi to Tokyo route guide. From Tokyo Station or Shinagawa, the Nozomi shinkansen reaches Shin-Osaka in about 155 minutes, at 13,870 yen non-reserved or around 14,500 yen reserved one way. Add the city-to-airport legs and this combo takes about the same total time as a long one-stop connection, but you gain Tokyo as a destination instead of losing a day to an airport layover. The smartest version is open-jaw: fly into Tokyo, take the train west, fly home from Kansai.

Option 3: the overnight bus, for the budget route

Inside Japan, the Tokyo-Osaka highway bus is the classic money-saver: about eight hours, with discount operators like Willer starting from around 2,500 yen one way, while premium buses with near-flat seats run up to 20,000 yen. Daytime and overnight departures both run, and the overnight version doubles as a hotel night. For a family of four, even a premium bus can undercut four shinkansen fares, but eight hours in a seat is a real cost; we would only choose it when the budget genuinely demands it.

What we would not bother with

Domestic flights between Tokyo's airports and Osaka look cheap on paper, but once you add airport transfers at both ends, the shinkansen's city-centre-to-city-centre 155 minutes almost always wins on door-to-door time. Driving makes no sense on this corridor for visitors: tolls and rental costs exceed the train, and parking in Osaka is a headache. Keep the car for the countryside, not the megacity hop.

Putting it together

Kansai-only trip: one-stop into KIX, ideally the Hanoi or Taipei routing, and you are on the ground before dinner. Tokyo plus Kansai: direct to Tokyo, Nozomi west, open-jaw home. Tightest budget: overnight bus one way, shinkansen the other. For what Osaka costs once you land, our Tokyo vs Osaka family comparison has the hotel and food maths, and the Hakone day trip plan shows how easily a rail pass-style day bolts onto a Tokyo leg.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Are there direct flights from Delhi to Osaka?

No airline flies direct from Delhi to Kansai (KIX). One-stop routes are fastest via Hanoi (about 8h25) or Taipei (about 8h30) per FlightConnections. The alternative is a direct Delhi-Tokyo flight (about 8 hours) plus the 155-minute Nozomi shinkansen.

Is it better to fly into Tokyo and take the train to Osaka?

If Tokyo is on your list, yes - book open-jaw (into Tokyo, home from Kansai) and take the Nozomi between them. If the trip is only Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, fly one-stop straight into KIX instead.

Is the Tokyo-Osaka overnight bus worth it?

It takes about 8 hours. Discount buses like Willer start around 2,500 yen one way and save a hotel night; premium buses run up to 20,000 yen. Worth it only when the budget is genuinely tight.
