Delhi to Queenstown: flight, train and road combinations that actually make sense

No direct flights to Queenstown - the fastest route is one stop via Melbourne or Sydney in about 15.5 hours, but Indian passports need a (free) Australian transit visa. The options, honestly compared.

Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital and its most beautiful airport approach - but from Delhi it takes planning. There are no direct flights, and the fastest one-stop routings pass through Australia, which adds a transit-visa step for Indian passports that catches people out. Here is every combination that makes sense, and why train and road are not in the conversation.

The one-stop options (fastest)

Route data updated in July 2026 shows two one-stop patterns: via Melbourne at about 15h 25m total, and via Sydney at about 15h 30m. Delhi-Melbourne runs about 12h 10m (Air India, plus Qantas seasonally October to March), then Melbourne-Queenstown is 3h 15m on Air New Zealand, Jetstar or Qantas. Delhi-Sydney is about 12h 25m, then Sydney-Queenstown 3h 05m. Qantas is the only airline selling the full route on one ticket with one stop - worth considering, because a single ticket means protected connections and through-checked bags. The catch: Indian ordinary passport holders need an Australian Transit Visa (subclass 771) even for airside transit. It is free of charge and allows up to 72 hours, but you must apply and have it granted before flying - do not leave it to the last week.

The two-stop options (no Australian transit visa)

If you would rather skip Australia entirely, the alternatives run through Asia: Delhi-Singapore-Auckland-Queenstown on Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand, or via Kuala Lumpur and other hubs. These add a second stop and push total travel time well past 20 hours, but every transit stays in airports where Indians do not need a transit visa. For parents, weigh the trade-off honestly: one stop plus paperwork, or two stops plus tiredness.

The New Zealand visa itself

Indian tourists need a full NZ Visitor Visa - no visa-free or NZeTA shortcut. Current INZ fees for an application from India total NZD 441 (a NZD 300 application fee, NZD 41 immigration levy and NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy). Immigration New Zealand says 80 percent of visitor visas are decided within two weeks, but build in at least six weeks before a December-March summer trip. Passports, funds and return tickets are checked on arrival.

Why train and road are not combinations

Between Delhi and Queenstown lies the Indian Ocean, Southeast Asia and the entire Australian continent - no rail line crosses an ocean, and no driveable route exists. Even within New Zealand, Queenstown has no railway: the last leg to ZQN is always by air (or a long scenic drive from Christchurch, five hours, for those doing a South Island road trip). Flights are the biggest cost of this trip, so book three to four months ahead for the December-March summer window.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

Are there direct flights from Delhi to Queenstown?

No. July 2026 route data shows two one-stop patterns: via Melbourne at about 15h 25m total and via Sydney at about 15h 30m. Delhi-Melbourne is about 12h 10m (Air India, plus Qantas seasonally October-March), then Melbourne-Queenstown 3h 15m on Air New Zealand, Jetstar or Qantas. Do Indians need a transit visa to fly via Australia to Queenstown?

Yes. Indian ordinary passport holders need an Australian Transit Visa (subclass 771) even for airside transit. It is free and allows up to 72 hours, but it must be applied for and granted before you fly - do not leave it to the last week. To avoid Australia entirely, two-stop routings via Singapore and Auckland exist, taking 20+ hours but needing no transit visa.

What does a New Zealand visa cost for Indians and how long does it take?

Indian tourists need a full NZ Visitor Visa - no visa-free or NZeTA shortcut. Current INZ fees from India total NZD 441 (NZD 300 application fee, NZD 41 immigration levy, NZD 100 International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy).
