Domestic first, international next: keep your visa ready at the first airport

IndiGo checks international documents at origin on its stated domestic-to-international connections. Compare the separate-ticket questions before you fly.

Domestic first, international next: keep your visa ready at the first airport

Sources checked: 28 October 2026. The policy example below is IndiGo's stated connection service, not a rule for every domestic ticket.

Yes, a journey that starts with a domestic flight can require your foreign visa and other international travel documents at the first airport. Our practical advice: do not leave them with someone meeting you at the international hub. IndiGo's baggage-transfer FAQ expressly says passports, visas and relevant travel documents are checked at the point of origin. It also says a passenger connecting internationally via a domestic sector cannot check in and board at origin without valid international travel documents. IndiGo: origin document checks.

First establish which booking you actually hold

IndiGo limits this service to a valid connection it sold as a connecting flight on one PNR. It excludes self-created connections and multi-city bookings, including multi-city combinations under one PNR. Two flights appearing in one travel plan is therefore not enough to establish the quoted service. Our suggestion: ask the airline to confirm whether your booking falls within that precise connection arrangement.

Diagram 1: a connection sold by IndiGo

This is an original teaching diagram, not an airport map, real booking or guaranteed physical route.

First Indian airport A
  | BEFORE the domestic flight:
  | passport + visa + relevant international documents checked
  v
Indian transfer airport B
  | continue under the confirmed itinerary
  v
International destination C

The important point is where the document check can stop the journey: A, not only B. IndiGo's same FAQ gives a counter closure of 75 minutes before the relevant flight at origin for an international connection via a domestic sector. This is a closing deadline, not a suggested arrival time. Confirm the required reporting time for the actual booking. IndiGo: connection scope and origin deadline.

Diagram 2: separately arranged domestic and international tickets

This diagram records questions to settle, not an exemption from checks.

Ticket 1: A -> B, domestic flight
Ask carrier 1: which originals and checks apply at A?
  |
  v
Ticket 2: B -> C, international flight
Ask carrier 2: where and by when must its document check finish?

IndiGo's domestic-document FAQ lists accepted original valid photo IDs, including a valid passport, driving licence and other listed IDs. That domestic ID list does not establish that a foreign visa will never be examined on a particular booking. Nor does exclusion from the quoted connection service answer every other carrier's procedure. Keep the required international documents with you from the start and get the actual check instructions from both carriers. IndiGo: travel documents FAQ.

Before leaving home: keep the originals with the traveller

Our suggested check: the actual passport and required destination or transit permission; the issued flight details for both legs; the booking's connection classification; and the first counter's document-check instructions and deadline. Check the destination's current rules for the actual passport and purpose separately. This article does not decide which visa you need or whether a digital copy is sufficient.

Our practical advice: do not send the passport or required visa evidence ahead in another person's bag. If someone else holds the documents, arrange their return before departure day. If a required document is missing, ask the airline what must be supplied before setting off; do not rely on explaining that the first flight stays inside India.

At the first counter: resolve the document check before boarding

Show the actual onward journey and say: "This booking starts domestically and continues internationally. Is this the document check required at origin, and is anything still missing?" This is our suggested question, not an airline script. The carrier check is not an immigration-clearance or destination-entry guarantee.

For the separate question of whether both boarding passes are issued at origin, use the boarding-pass guide. It does not replace this origin-document check.

AI illustration: Fictional blank travel documents prepared at home. Not a real passport, visa, booking, airline counter or airport.

Quick questions

Can the visa check happen before the first domestic flight?

Yes. IndiGo explicitly requires valid international travel documents at origin for its stated domestic-to-international connections. Keep the one-PNR, IndiGo-sold connection scope attached.

Do separate tickets prove that the first airline will not check the foreign visa?

No. The quoted connection rule excludes self-created and multi-city connections. Ask the actual carriers what they will check; exclusion is not a no-check promise.

Is the first airline document check the same as departure immigration?

No. This guide concerns carrier document checks. Confirm the actual airport route and border checks separately.
