Ask about the second flight, not just “check-in complete”
Sometimes, but not on every itinerary. The question is whether the origin carrier can issue the onward flight’s pass for your actual booking. Air India says passenger through-check on interline and codeshare journeys is available where IATCI, its Interline Agreement for Through Check In, is enabled. Where it is not enabled, you may need to check in again at the transfer point. This is an Air India partner-policy example, not a promise by every airline. Official source.
Diagram 1: a confirmed through journey
Our teaching diagram separates ticket linkage from actual document issuance. Ask the origin counter whether each flight’s pass is issued; do not assume that one ticket always produces both passes at once.
Origin A (India) → transfer B → final C, linked through journey
At A: onward pass issued? YES → retain both current passes
At A: onward pass NOT issued → confirm where to collect it at B
For the scope of IndiGo’s origin-issued passes on its stated connections, see the existing bag-tag guide; verify your actual booking with the airline.
Diagram 2: two separate tickets
Air India’s partner FAQ says check-in on separate tickets is restricted to the destination on each individual ticket. Its named example is Delhi–Frankfurt on Air India and Frankfurt–Helsinki on Finnair, bought separately: Air India issues the pass only as far as Frankfurt and the traveller checks in again for Finnair. Keep that example’s scope; it is not a worldwide refusal by every carrier. Official source.
Delhi: Air India ticket 1 → pass to Frankfurt
↓
Frankfurt: complete onward Finnair check-in
↓
Finnair ticket 2 → onward pass to Helsinki
A partner pass can still be collected at transfer
IndiGo’s codeshare FAQ expressly says to collect a missing onward partner-leg boarding pass from the partner airline’s transfer desk. Our suggestion: before leaving the origin counter, ask which carrier and service point will issue the missing pass, and what route and deadline apply to you. A missing onward pass does not by itself diagnose a cancelled booking or remove entry-document requirements. Official source.
Online availability is another question
British Airways says its app can download connecting-flight passes where possible for flights departing within 24 hours. This is a BA app example, not a check-in window for Indian carriers. Air India says some international or domestic-then-international online check-ins produce a confirmation slip and need airport-counter verification before a boarding pass is issued. Do not treat an online check-in message as proof that both passes are ready. Official source.
Leave the counter with an answer for each segment
Our suggested record has two lines, one per flight: operating airline, airports, local departure date, issued pass or still pending, and the airline-confirmed collection point and deadline if pending. Check the actual document for each flight. Separately ask about bags, border checks and the permitted transfer route; the number of passes does not answer those questions.
For ticket responsibility, use the connection guide. For document fields or a missing seat, use pass-reading guide / seat-status guide.

Quick questions
Does one through-ticket guarantee both boarding passes at origin?
Do not assume that. Air India makes partner passenger through-check conditional on IATCI enablement; confirm actual onward issuance with the origin carrier.
Where do I get an IndiGo codeshare partner pass if it was not issued?
Its codeshare FAQ directs passengers to the partner airline’s transfer desk. Confirm the location, permitted route and deadline for the actual flight.
Do two boarding passes prove my bags or missed connection are covered?
No. Confirm baggage handling, border requirements and ticket responsibility separately; this guide concerns pass issuance.
