An immigration question is not a test with a secret model answer. Prepare to explain the trip you are actually taking and show the documents for it. Delhi Airport says its departure officer verifies travel documents and asks a few questions about travel plans. This Delhi Airport page does not list the questions. The prompts below are our preparation exercise, not official questions guaranteed to be asked. Delhi Airport: departure immigration.

Before travel: make one accurate trip summary

Know the destination, actual purpose, travel dates, places you expect to stay and the people travelling with you. Keep your real booking details accessible. If plans are flexible, describe what is booked and what is still undecided honestly; do not invent a hotel, companion, job or return journey to sound more convincing.

Departure clearance in India and permission to enter another country are different decisions. The Bureau of Immigration says citizens of India as well as foreigners are required to obtain immigration clearance both on arrival and on departure to/from India. The destination’s own entry and transit rules still need a separate check for your passport and itinerary. This guide concerns departure preparation, not an assurance of admission abroad. General Guidelines for those travelling to India.

Before joining the queue: keep the required documents together

Delhi Airport lists a valid passport, visa if applicable and boarding pass for departure immigration. Keep the details of the actual trip available to explain if asked, without treating hotel or funding prompts as documents always demanded at this counter. For the wider packing and document-access routine, use the checkpoint document guide. Delhi Airport: departure immigration.

At the counter: listen, then answer the question asked

A short factual answer is easier to check than a rehearsed speech. These are topics to practise before travelling, not a published Indian immigration interview script: Where are you going? What is the actual purpose? Which dates are booked? Where will you stay? Who is travelling with you? If asked about trip funding, work, a host or an onward plan, explain the real arrangement and show relevant evidence when requested.

Practise using your own information, not our invented example or another traveller’s answer. If the true purpose is work, study, visiting family or another activity, do not call it tourism simply because this guide is aimed at tourists. Our suggestion: check that any travel permission fits the actual purpose; this article does not determine which visa you need.

If a question or document is unclear: clarify instead of guessing

Ask the officer to repeat or explain a question you did not understand. Tell staff if you need communication help and ask what support is available; do not assume a family member may answer every question for you. If a date or booking detail is uncertain, refer to the document rather than making up a confident answer.

Our suggestion: if the information in your booking or document is wrong, identify the actual error and ask the responsible airline, issuing authority or officer what to do. Do not edit a passport scan, boarding pass or booking confirmation to conceal a mismatch. If referred for another check, follow the officer’s directions and tell relevant airline staff if your boarding time is becoming a problem. Ask staff what the further check means for your next step; this guide does not determine its outcome.

After the check: continue on the route staff give you

Delhi Airport’s published departure sequence places immigration after airline check-in and before security screening. That is the Delhi example, not a promise that every airport or connection uses the same physical route. Follow the signs and instructions for your actual terminal and keep the passport and boarding pass ready for later checks. Delhi Airport: departure immigration.

A well-organised folder or clear answer does not override an officer’s decision, document requirements or airline deadlines. This guide helps you prepare truthful information; it does not predict how many questions you will face, how long the check will take or whether clearance will be granted.

Last check before leaving home

Can you find your current flight, dates and stay details without someone else’s chat history? Do the documents reflect the real plan? Do you know what remains unconfirmed? Can you explain the purpose in ordinary words? Have you checked destination and transit requirements separately? Fix a genuine gap before departure day where possible rather than learning a script to hide it.
