Domestic first, international next: where is Indian exit immigration?

Sources checked: 28 October 2026. The ordinary route below is a Delhi example; the origin-clearance exception is Air India's specified Easy Connect programme.

A domestic first flight does not, by itself, tell you where Indian exit immigration happens. For an ordinary domestic arrival followed by an international departure at Delhi, Delhi Airport directs passengers through departure immigration there. But Air India's eligible Easy Connect journeys complete immigration at the Indian origin airport, without repeating it at the Delhi hub. Establish the actual arrangement before deciding which airport handles your border check. Delhi departure process; Air India programme.

Separate the airline check from exit immigration

An airline examining your passport or visa is not the same event as an immigration officer clearing your departure. Neither an international destination on the itinerary nor two boarding passes proves which airport performs immigration. Our practical suggestion: ask the airline, "At which Indian airport will I complete exit immigration for this booking?" Keep the carrier's document instructions and the border-clearance location as two separate entries in your journey note.

For the separate carrier-document question, read the first-airport visa-check guide. That airline check does not itself establish immigration clearance.

Diagram 1: separate tickets through Delhi, ordinary departure route

This original teaching diagram shows the immigration location, not an airport map, complete baggage procedure or a real booking. Airport A and destination C are placeholders. It is not an Easy Connect eligibility ruling for separately arranged flights.

Ticket 1: Indian airport A -> Delhi, domestic arrival

Ticket 2: Delhi -> foreign destination C

EXIT IMMIGRATION AT DELHI

security -> international departure

Delhi's transit guide says separate-ticket passengers must check in again and go through security, with immigration where international. Its departure guide places immigration after airline check-in and before security. Confirm the actual terminal and airline instructions; this diagram does not settle bag collection, acceptance deadlines or a terminal-transfer path. Delhi: separate-ticket transit; Delhi: departure sequence.

Delhi's two pages list the steps in different order; follow your airline's and the airport's instructions on the day.

Diagram 2: a through journey can have two immigration branches

Check the flight numbers on your ticket. Air India says an AI 11xx flight means you are on its Easy Connect hub-and-spoke programme, and then the three conditions below decide where immigration happens. Without an AI 11xx flight, expect the standard Delhi process, and confirm with the airline. The Varanasi example comes from Air India; it is not a dated flight offer or a claim that every Varanasi service qualifies.

Through journey: Indian origin -> Delhi -> abroad

Standard Delhi departure process

domestic arrival at Delhi

-> EXIT IMMIGRATION AT DELHI -> onward departure

Confirmed eligible Air India Easy Connect

Varanasi: check-in + EXIT IMMIGRATION

-> Delhi international transfer, no repeat immigration

-> onward international flight

Air India's programme FAQ requires all three: an AI 11xx flight; an international sector on the ticket; and four hours or less between the first flight's arrival and the second flight's departure. If any condition is absent, it says standard check-in and immigration procedures apply. Its outbound section specifically says connections beyond four hours do not qualify and immigration is at Delhi. Do not identify eligibility from the city name alone. Air India: eligibility and outbound branches.

If origin immigration applies, prepare for it before the first flight

For its stated eligible outbound journeys, Air India asks passengers to arrive at least three hours before departure because check-in and immigration happen at origin. Web check-in is unavailable. Keep the physical boarding pass and passport accessible. This reporting instruction belongs to that programme, not every domestic first leg.

The page also requires Indian nationals to register for DigiYatra and use the hub transfer e-gates, with a smartphone and the Indian SIM for the Aadhaar-linked number needed for registration. It describes manual document verification for non-Indian nationals. This is the programme's transfer instruction, not general international DigiYatra eligibility or an assumed manual fallback for an Indian traveller. If you cannot meet it, settle the actual arrangement with Air India before travel. Air India: origin and hub instructions.

Do not turn this diagram into a Customs or baggage instruction

This guide determines neither Customs declaration nor bag custody. Air India's programme page is internally inconsistent about origin Customs: its main guidance and high-value-goods answer say declaration facilities are unavailable at spoke airports, while another answer refers to origin Customs clearance. We therefore make no positive claim that Customs is completed at origin. Ask the airline and Customs about your actual goods and journey. Do not copy a bag-reclaim route from an unrelated arrival guide.

Before leaving home, get one clear airport answer

Our suggested final check: record the issued flights, booking arrangement, confirmed immigration airport, terminal instructions and first-flight reporting time. Recheck after a schedule change, especially if an Easy Connect connection moves beyond four hours. At the airport, if a sign or staff instruction differs from your note, show the actual onward flight and ask which immigration route applies before leaving the transfer area. A diagram cannot grant clearance or keep a boarding gate open.

Quick questions

Does every domestic-first international trip clear immigration at the hub?

No. The ordinary Delhi route does, but eligible Air India Easy Connect journeys clear at origin. Confirm the actual booking and all programme conditions.

Does one through ticket automatically mean immigration at origin?

No. Air India specifies AI 11xx, an international sector and a connection of four hours or less for its programme.

Is an airline checking my visa the same as exit immigration?

No. Keep the carrier document check and the immigration-clearance airport separate.
