There is no single domestic transfer counter location for every Indian airport or airline. You need the desk for your onward flight and the route that accepts your actual ticket. A general airport information desk can point you there; it is not automatically an airline check-in or bag-drop counter.

1. Before landing: identify the flight you need help with

Keep your onward flight number and date, operating airline, departure terminal, ticket or booking reference, current boarding pass if issued, and bag-tag receipts together. Ask for “domestic transfer for this flight” and show the booking. A domestic destination printed on a bag tag does not by itself identify the counter you should use.

2. Finish the required arrival formalities before the onward handoff

CBIC’s February 2026 explanatory travel guide places immigration first, then baggage collection if any, then customs. Do not walk past a required customs step just because a sign says transfer. Its guide is a practical reference, not itself the law. Actual airline programmes can have different clearance arrangements: Air India EasyConnect has qualifying flight and ticket conditions, so obtain that booking’s instructions rather than applying an ordinary arrival route to it. Official source.

For a confirmed special programme, follow the carrier’s actual immigration and customs instructions. Having an onward domestic flight does not by itself qualify you for it. This guide does not determine programme eligibility or quote customs allowances. Official source.

3. Delhi example: same T3 departure, follow the domestic-transfer signs

Delhi Airport’s international-to-domestic guide says that after immigration, baggage collection and customs clearance, a traveller continuing within T3 should follow the yellow signs for domestic transfer and should not exit the terminal building. Use this as a Delhi T3 route instruction, not a universal sign colour or a specific airline’s acceptance promise. Official source.

Air India’s Delhi page confirms that a transit desk exists, but does not give an exact domestic-transfer desk position. Do not substitute its departure ticketing office, PRM desk or self-service machines for an unverified transfer-counter location. Ask staff for the current Air India transit desk and show the onward flight before moving to another level. Official source.

4. Confirm what the counter can actually do

Before joining a queue, ask whether it handles this airline, terminal and booking type; whether you need a new boarding pass or only bag drop; where checked bags must be handed over; and which security route follows. Air India’s Delhi self-service section excludes domestic transit passengers from the listed domestic self-check-in and self-bag-drop facilities. A machine being nearby is not proof it is your transit route. Official source.

5. IndiGo example: its sold connection is not every one-PNR itinerary

IndiGo says its international-to-domestic baggage-transfer facility is for a valid connecting journey sold by IndiGo under one PNR, not a self-created or multi-city combination. For those qualifying connections, it describes collecting bags at the first Indian port of entry, clearing customs and using the domestic bag-drop counter. If the onward flight changes terminals, the passenger carries the bag to the departure terminal’s bag drop. Confirm the specific counter with staff; do not assume a bag-drop desk accepts every separate ticket. Official source.

6. Different terminal: the next counter may be at departures

Delhi’s international-to-domestic guide tells passengers continuing from another terminal to complete arrival formalities, leave for the onward terminal and enter at departures for check-in and security. Confirm the actual onward terminal with your airline before leaving the transfer area. A transfer service inside T3 is not proof you should stay there for a flight departing elsewhere. This article gives no shuttle stop, walking time or guaranteed connection buffer. Official source.

7. If you cannot locate the service, use a staffed information point

Ask airport staff to identify the onward airline’s domestic transfer or departure check-in route. Mumbai Airport’s information-desk page lists an international-arrival hall information desk between baggage belts 8 and 9. That is an airport-information landmark, not a domestic airline transfer counter. Ask there for the correct service for your flight rather than treating the desk as a place to check bags. Official source.

Before leaving the desk: read back the next step

Say the confirmed terminal, counter or service name, whether bags go with you, the remaining boarding-pass or document check, and the route to security. Check the airline’s current counter and gate deadlines. If time is short or the counter cannot take the booking, ask the onward airline immediately. Finding a desk does not guarantee boarding or a free change.

Keep these details accessible

Passport and required entry documents; both flight details; issued onward pass if available; ticket reference; bag receipts; actual departure terminal; remaining counter, security and gate steps. The useful question is not only “where is a transfer desk?” but “which service completes the remaining work for my flight?”

AI illustration: Fictional traveller asks staff for transfer directions; not an actual airport, desk location or airline service.
