First time at Rome Termini: find the train, then the platform

Match the train number and current station board at Roma Termini. Some numbered platforms need a much longer walk than the main concourse suggests.

At Roma Termini, a platform number is not enough until you have matched it to your actual train. Keep the operator, train number, departure time, destination, coach and seat easy to read. A city name may appear on several services, while the final destination on a board can differ from the stop where you get off.

Use the station board, not an old screenshot

Read the current departure information and announcements. RFI's online Live Arrivals/Departures Monitor is useful for preparation, but RFI warns that online information may appear up to three minutes after information in the station. Use the station's visual and audio announcements when there is a difference.

If the platform is not yet displayed, wait near a useful information point rather than guessing from a previous journey. If it changes, confirm the new number before moving the group. This guide does not provide a permanent platform for a named train.

Understand the main hall orientation

RFI says that with Piazza dei Cinquecento behind you, you cross the station hall to reach the platform turnstiles. In that orientation, platform 1 is at the far left on the Via Marsala side; platform 24 is at the far right on the Via Giolitti side.

This is an orientation guide, not a promise about the closest entrance for your hotel or a step-free route. If you arrive from a side street, first establish which direction you are facing instead of applying left and right blindly.

Some platforms need extra walking

RFI says platforms 1 East and 2 East are reached by continuing along platform 1 for approximately 500 metres, or directly from Via Marsala 49. Platforms 25 to 29 are reached by continuing along platform 24 for about 500 metres. Allow for that walk before your boarding deadline.

The same source explains that platform 15 is reached by continuing along 14, platform 18 along 17 and platform 20 bis along 20. Read the complete platform label, including East or bis, rather than stopping at the first matching number.

After the platform, find the coach

Have the valid ticket ready at the platform access point and follow staff directions. Once at the correct train, match the coach number on the train to the reservation. The platform is not your carriage number, and the seat number alone does not identify the carriage.

Keep your group and bags out of the boarding flow while checking. If assistance or a route without stairs is necessary, arrange it through the relevant service beforehand; platform directions alone do not confirm that help or accessibility for your particular journey.

If you are unsure

Ask staff using the train number and departure time, not just Florence, Naples or another city. Leave enough time for ticket questions, gates and the longer platform walks. No universal arrival buffer fits every passenger, entrance and mobility need.

The platform-layout details above come from RFI's Termini guide checked 25 October 2026. Current station instructions take priority over this guide if works or operations change the route.

Quick questions

Can I rely only on the online board? RFI warns it can lag station information by up to three minutes.

Are 1 East and 1 the same stopping point? No. RFI describes a roughly 500 metre continuation for the East platforms.

Is the platform my carriage? No. Match coach and seat separately after finding the train.

Is the station layout proof of step-free access? No. Confirm the exact accessible route and any help separately.
