The overnight train from Hanoi does not reach Sapa. It stops at Lao Cai station, on the Chinese border, and Sapa town is still 30 to 35 km up the mountain. This last leg is where tired travellers overpay. Here is what each option costs in 2026, and what to check before you get into anything.
The shared minivan: what most people take
Step out of the station and a line of 9 to 16-seater minivans is waiting, timed to the train arrivals. A seat costs 50,000 to 100,000 VND per person when you arrange it on the spot (a railway-connected transfer was going for 60,000 VND in October 2026). The van leaves once it fills, usually a 5 to 20 minute wait, and takes 50 to 75 minutes to Sapa town. The catch: it drops you near the lake or the Stone Church, not at your hotel door, and luggage space is tight. Seats pre-booked on online platforms run 175,000 to 312,500 VND for the same ride, so book locally unless you want a confirmed seat.
The route 01 public bus: the cheapest seat
Lao Cai's route 01 public bus runs from the station square to the church in the centre of Sapa for 30,000 to 50,000 VND, taking 60 to 90 minutes. It is fine if you have one bag and time. With parents and suitcases after an overnight train, skip it.
Taxi or private car: the family choice
A private car costs 350,000 to 550,000 VND per vehicle to central Sapa, depending on car size and where exactly you are staying. The meter math: taxis charge about 15,000 VND per km, the ride is about 30 km, so a fair metered fare is around 450,000 VND ($18). Recognisable companies on this route include Mai Linh, Xanh SM (metered electric taxis), Sapa Green and Phanxipang. Both the Grab and Xanh SM apps work in Lao Cai, which removes the haggling entirely. The most comfortable version: ask your Sapa hotel to send a car with a name sign ($25 to 45 pre-booked), so nobody negotiates anything at 6 in the morning.
What to check before you get in
- Agree the full price first, before the luggage goes into the car. Once the bags are in, your leverage is gone.
- Per car, not per person. Say it out loud and confirm it, especially with station taxis.
- Have your hotel name and address in Vietnamese on your phone, and ask your hotel the day before what the current fair rate is.
- Confirm the drop point. A van that ends at a company office or the church can leave you a paid taxi ride away from a far-flung homestay.
- Staying in Ta Van or the Muong Hoa valley? Shared vans do not serve the villages. Book a car through your accommodation.
Heading back down
The same cars and vans run from Sapa to Lao Cai station for the return trains: SP8 leaves Lao Cai at 12:05, SP16 at 21:25 and SP4 at 21:50. Travellers in 2026 report the first hour of the descent as hard on the stomach, so sit up front and keep breakfast light.
