Getting from Muscat airport to Mutrah: taxis, costs and what to check before landing

Muscat airport to the Mutrah corniche is 25-40 minutes and OMR 8-12 by official taxi, or about OMR 1 on the A1 bus to Ruwi. What to sort before you land - cash, apps and the fare conversation.

Muscat International Airport sits about 18km west of the city centre and roughly 25-30km from the Mutrah corniche, where most first-time visitors end up. The transfer is simple once you know the three options and one habit to build before you leave the terminal: agree the meter or a fixed fare before the car moves.

Official airport taxis

The regulated taxi rank is directly outside arrivals. Oman's official taxis increasingly run on a digital meter - around OMR 1.5 base plus about OMR 0.25 per kilometre - though many drivers still quote a fixed price, and current airport-transfer guides put the Ruwi/Muttrah central area at OMR 8-12 for a 25-40 minute ride (Al Khuwair a little less at OMR 6-10, Qurum around OMR 7-11). There is no formal luggage surcharge. If a driver quotes well above OMR 12 for Mutrah, politely insist on the meter or take the next cab - unmetered negotiation is still common, so the fare conversation happens before departure, not after.

Ride-hailing apps

OTaxi (the Omani app) and Careem both work at the airport and show the price upfront, which removes the negotiation entirely - worth the two minutes of setup if you have data on arrival. Prices track the official taxi band for Mutrah, and card payment in-app avoids the cash question.

The Mwasalat A1 bus

On a tight budget, the state-run Mwasalat A1 city bus runs from the airport to Ruwi about every 30 minutes, taking roughly 45 minutes. Fare guidance differs by source - recent airport guides quote around OMR 1, while a 2026 bus guide lists the airport-Ruwi hop at about OMR 0.50 - so carry small rial notes or coins and expect it to be a rial or less either way. From Ruwi to Mutrah you still need a short taxi hop, so with luggage or parents the bus rarely wins on door-to-door effort. It also stops running in the evening, so for the late-night arrivals (the IndiGo and Air India Express flights land around 23:00) the bus is not an option - plan a taxi or app ride.

What to sort before landing

Carry small Omani rial notes - drivers struggle to change a 50. Screenshot your hotel name and address; Mutrah is also written Muttrah or Matrah, and drivers know it by all three. If your hotel offers a transfer, compare its price against the OMR 8-12 taxi band before accepting. And if you are landing late, message your guesthouse the arrival time - Mutrah's smaller hotels lock up early.

How much is a taxi from Muscat airport to Mutrah and how long does it take?

The regulated taxi rank is directly outside arrivals. Official taxis increasingly run a digital meter (around OMR 1.5 base plus about OMR 0.25 per km), but many drivers quote fixed prices; current airport-transfer guides put Ruwi/Muttrah at OMR 8-12 for a 25-40 minute ride (Al Khuwair OMR 6-10, Qurum OMR 7-11). Does Uber or Careem work at Muscat airport?

Not Uber, but OTaxi (the Omani app) and Careem both operate at the airport and show the price upfront, ending any negotiation. Prices track the official taxi band for Mutrah, and in-app card payment avoids the cash question. Worth the two minutes of setup if you have data on arrival.

Is there a bus from Muscat airport to the city?

Yes - the state-run Mwasalat A1 city bus runs from the airport to Ruwi about every 30 minutes, taking roughly 45 minutes. Fare sources differ: recent airport guides quote around OMR 1, while a 2026 bus guide lists the airport-Ruwi hop at about OMR 0.50, so carry small rial notes and expect a rial or less.
