Madurai airport (IXM) is the usual arrival point for a Kodaikanal trip, and the lake is where most visitors are headed first. The drive is about 120 km and takes 3 to 3.5 hours, including the slow ghat climb after Batlagundu. There is no direct bus from the airport to Kodaikanal, so the real choice is a pre-booked taxi the whole way, or a cheaper two-leg bus journey through Madurai city.
Option 1: Pre-booked taxi, airport to the lake
This is what most families do, and for a group of three or four it is usually the right call. Current fixed-fare quotes for the full Madurai airport to Kodaikanal run sit in a wide band: around ₹2,300 to ₹3,400 for a sedan with budget operators, and ₹5,800 to ₹7,700 with larger operators or bigger vehicles like an Ertiga or Innova. Most fixed-fare packages include flight tracking and about 30 minutes of free waiting after landing.
Two things to settle on the phone before you fly: whether the quote includes tolls and the hill-section charge, and the exact pickup point. Some drivers wait at the arrivals gate with a placard; others ask you to walk to the airport parking bay. Share your flight number so the driver tracks delays instead of starting the waiting clock on schedule time.
Option 2: Airport bus to Mattuthavani, then a Kodaikanal bus
If you are travelling light and want to save money, the airport has city buses listed by AAI that run into Madurai: routes such as 16F, 10A and 10J connect the airport to M.G.R Bus Stand (Mattuthavani) and Periyar Bus Stand in about 40 to 50 minutes. Kodaikanal buses, both TNSTC and private, leave from Mattuthavani, not from Periyar, so aim for the Mattuthavani service.
Madurai to Kodaikanal buses run through the day, ordinary to AC, with fares roughly in the ₹150 to ₹400 range per person. The climb section winds for the last 40-odd km, so if anyone in your group gets motion sick, sit near the front and keep the middle seats for the steadiest stomachs.
What to check before landing
- Pickup point: arrivals gate or parking bay - get it in writing in the booking message.
- Fare inclusions: tolls, the hill or ghat section charge, driver bata, and extra waiting beyond the free window.
- Flight tracking: confirm the operator tracks your flight number so a late arrival does not eat the free waiting time.
- Night arrivals: the ghat road is unlit in stretches; with elderly parents or small children, a daytime landing or a Madurai overnight is kinder.
Arriving at Kodaikanal Lake
Kodaikanal Lake sits in the middle of town, about 1.5 km from the Kodaikanal bus stand: a 15 to 20 minute walk, or a short auto ride with luggage. Taxis drop you at your hotel or at the lake entrance directly. If your hotel is on the far side of the lake, tell the driver before the climb - the one-way lakeside loop is easier with a drop plan than figured out at the top.
