Queenstown Airport sits in Frankton, about 8km and 15 minutes from the town centre on Lake Wakatipu's edge. The transfer is short and scenic - the Remarkables fill the windscreen - but the fare spread is wide, so decide your mode before you walk out of arrivals.
Taxis and rideshare
The official Queenstown Airport guidance gives typical one-way fares: NZD 50-85 to the CBD, NZD 25-40 to Frankton and Remarkables Park, and NZD 85-115 to Arrowtown. An airport charge of NZD 9.10 per ride is already included in those totals. Taxis and app-based rideshare (Uber operates here) run day and night, door to door - the right choice with luggage, kids or parents. The airport's own advice: agree the fare or confirm the meter before the car moves, and ask for a receipt if anything feels off.
The Orbus bus (the budget win)
Orbus route 1 links the airport with the town centre, running between Remarkables Park and Fernhill through the CBD. The fare difference is the whole story: adults pay NZD 2.50 with a Bee Card versus NZD 4 cash. A Bee Card costs NZD 5 plus a minimum NZD 5 top-up and can be bought from the driver in cash - so a family planning several bus days should get cards on day one. Buses take roughly 25-30 minutes to town with stops. Note the senior rule before you count on it: the free off-peak bus travel you may read about is for NZ residents holding a SuperGold card - visiting seniors pay the ordinary adult fare.
Shuttles and rental cars
Shared-ride shuttles (Super Shuttle is the known operator) sell door-to-door seats between taxi and bus prices - sensible for solo travellers with bags; for two or more people a taxi or Uber usually works out the same or less per person. Rental-car desks are in the terminal, but think twice if Queenstown town is your base: the centre is compact and parking is scarce and charged. Pick up the car on the day you leave for Te Anau or Wanaka instead.
What to sort before landing
Carry some NZD in small notes for a Bee Card or backup taxi. Screenshot your accommodation address and check whether it is in the CBD (walkable, hilly in parts) or Frankton (near the airport, flatter) - the two are 15 minutes apart and taxis price them differently. Download Uber if you plan to use it. And if you land after dark in winter, pre-arrange the transfer: taxis thin out when the last flights land.
