The good news first: Samui Airport (USM) sits unusually close to the action - Chaweng is 3-7 km depending on which stretch of beach your hotel is on, a 10-20 minute ride. The friction is not distance, it is the system: this is a privately-owned, open-air tropical airport with no metered taxis and no free-for-all pickup lane. Everything is channelled through one fixed-price counter. Here is how it works and what it costs in 2026.
The arrivals-hall counter (the default)
After baggage, before the exit, you will find the airport's official transport counter. Its published fixed private-car fares (checked October 2026): ฿400 to Chaweng, Bo Phut, Bangrak and Choeng Mon; ฿600 to Maenam; ฿700 to Lamai. Pay at the counter, get a slip, and a driver is assigned - no negotiation, no meter anxiety, cars on demand for every landing. For a family with luggage landing after a long flight, this is the no-thinking option and it is priced fairly for the distance.
The shared minivan (the saver)
The same arrivals area sells shared minivan seats at about ฿150-200 per person to Chaweng. The van waits to fill, then drops passengers hotel by hotel along the beach road. For one or two people with time, this halves the cost; for three or four, the private car at ฿400 total is already cheaper than four seats. The trade is time: filling the van plus the drop-off chain can turn a 15-minute ride into 40.
Grab (the app option, with a wrinkle)
Grab works on Samui and prices a Chaweng run from the airport in the same ฿300-500 band - sometimes under the counter fare, sometimes over at peak. The wrinkle: app cars cannot always enter the airport's own pickup lane; the standard move is to walk out to the public road by the airport entrance and meet the car there (a 2-3 minute walk with bags). Check the live app price against the counter board before committing - when the app shows ฿350+ with a wait, the counter's ฿400 with zero wait usually wins.
What to check before you land
- Your hotel's beach stretch. "Chaweng" spans about 5 km of coastline - Chaweng Noi is a separate, slightly pricier drop south of the main strip. Know your hotel name and area; the counter prices by zone.
- Your arrival hour. Counters serve every scheduled landing, but after the last evening bank of Bangkok flights, options thin to the counter or your hotel's pickup. Landing after 9 PM, a pre-booked hotel transfer is worth the premium for certainty.
- Cash. The counter and minivan take baht, cards are unreliable at transport desks; ATMs are in the arrivals area - draw before you queue.
- Return leg. There is no fixed counter at the beach end; your hotel books a car back at roughly the same zone fare. Agree the price the night before a morning flight.
If you are continuing to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao
Ferries to Phangan leave from Bangrak and Maenam piers (Lomprayah from Maenam also serves Tao) - both within the ฿400-600 counter zones and 10-25 minutes from the airport. If your same-day plan is airport-to-ferry, tell the counter your ferry operator and departure time; they route to the right pier, and the fixed fare already covers it. Leave a 60-90 minute buffer between landing and ferry departure.
