Getting from Varanasi airport to Assi Ghat: taxis, costs and what to check before landing

The airport is 22 km from the city and a prepaid taxi service runs there. The old-city lanes are where the plan usually breaks.

Getting to Assi Ghat is short on the map and slow in practice. The airport is out at Babatpur, the ghat is in the old city, and the last stretch is where taxis stop. Here is what the official pages say and what to check.

1. The distance

The Varanasi district website says Lal Bahadur Shastri airport at Babatpur is 22 km from Varanasi. It does not give a distance to Assi Ghat in particular. Incredible India describes Assi Ghat as the place for Subah-e-Banaras, a sunrise gathering of yoga, music and devotion, so many people want to be near it early. Ask your hotel for the real drive time to its door.

2. Taxis at the airport

The district website says a prepaid taxi service is available at Babatpur airport. It also says private taxis can be booked through travel agencies, hotels and online services. Use the prepaid counter if you want a fixed fare before you sit in the car, and ask the counter to name the destination and the amount on the slip.

3. Costs

We found no dated official fare from the airport to Assi Ghat, so we do not quote one. The district page lists old rate ranges for hired cars and auto-rickshaws, and advises tourists to fix the fare before travelling. Do that, and ask the hotel what a fair fare is before you land.

4. The last stretch

The district page warns that some routes in old Varanasi, around the temples and markets, have one-way traffic, and that auto-rickshaws and big vehicles are not permitted on them. So the car may stop short of your hotel. Ask the hotel:

  • Where exactly should the taxi drop us?
  • Is there luggage help for the walk from there?
  • Is the walk on steps or lanes, and how long is it?

5. If you have parents or heavy bags

Book a hotel with a drop point close to the door, or ask for an arrangement in advance. Do not decide this at the kerb with tired people.
