New Delhi (NDLS) and Hazrat Nizamuddin (NZM) are two separate railheads, several kilometres apart - too far to treat as a walk, especially with luggage. If your itinerary has you arriving at one and departing from the other, plan the transfer as its own leg: choose road or metro, keep a generous buffer, and confirm both trains on the day's display boards or the 139 enquiry line.
Option 1: taxi, app cab or auto
The door-to-door option. Book an app cab, or use the prepaid taxi or auto counters at the station rather than negotiating with touts outside. Travel time depends entirely on Delhi traffic, which can be slow at peak hours, so treat any estimate as a guess and keep margin. At New Delhi, know which face you are exiting - the Paharganj side and the Ajmeri Gate side have different pickup points; agreeing the wrong one adds a long walk with luggage.
Option 2: Delhi Metro
The metro avoids road traffic, but there is no single train between the two stations: from the New Delhi metro station serving NDLS you change lines to reach Sarai Kale Khan - Nizamuddin on the Pink Line, which sits beside Hazrat Nizamuddin railway station. Check DMRC's current network map for the interchange and the day's first and last train timings before you commit, and remember you will be carrying your own luggage through gates, stairs and platforms.
A current caveat: NDLS redevelopment
New Delhi station is undergoing major redevelopment, and a press advisory dated 16 October 2026 reported temporary platform changes for a number of trains between 16 October and 17 November 2026. So even before the transfer, confirm which platform - and which face - your departing train actually uses, on the station's display boards or the 139 line.
Keep the buffer honest
Build the plan backwards from your onward train's departure: the cross-city leg, finding the right entrance, and any queue at checking all take time, and your onward train will not wait. If your incoming train starts running late, check its current status on the National Train Enquiry System feeds or call 139, and speak to railway staff early rather than gambling on a tight dash.
Quick questions
Can I walk between New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin? It is not a practical plan with luggage - the stations are several kilometres apart on busy city roads. Take a cab or auto, or use the metro with a line change.
How much time should I keep between two trains at different stations? You cannot judge this from one fixed number: it depends on the day's traffic, your mode, queues, your luggage and mobility, and any redevelopment changes at NDLS. Keep a generous buffer, and if your first train runs late, talk to railway staff early instead of hoping.
Will my train stop at both stations? Do not assume so. Some trains serve one station and not the other, and patterns differ by train - check each train's stops for your travel date on NTES or the 139 enquiry line before planning around it.
What is easiest with an elderly parent or heavy bags? A pre-booked cab or app cab door to door, with station staff asked about the assistance or accessible route available that day. The metro works, but a line change with heavy bags and stairs is tiring - decide based on the traveller, not the fare.
