Hokkaido is where a Japan budget stretches. Room for room, it undercuts Kyoto and Tokyo, its headline day trip costs less than a lunch, and its best free show - snow itself - needs no ticket. Here is the honest money picture for a couple, from current surveys and official fares.
Hotels: the big number
HotelBank's October 2026 survey of OTA listed rates (7,666 business hotels nationwide) puts the average Hokkaido double room at 17,797 yen per night for two, tax included - against a national average of 16,067, Kyoto at 21,942 and Tokyo at 21,058. Staying central costs more: the same survey's Chuo Ward, Sapporo benchmark is 21,001 yen. The season swings matter more than the city: a Metro Engine analysis of 130 Sapporo business hotels (October 2026) shows median two-person rooms at 12,400 yen in November but 24,100 yen in February - the Snow Festival roughly doubles prices, with festival Saturdays quoted far higher still. The rule: come any month except early February, or book February a season ahead.
Transport: pleasingly small numbers
The JR Rapid Airport from New Chitose to Sapporo Station is 1,150 yen one way, 37 minutes (our airport transfer guide compares it with buses and post-2025 taxi meters). The classic day trip, Sapporo to Otaru, is 750 to 800 yen each way on JR rapid trains - a return for two runs about 3,000 to 3,200 yen, less than one taxi across town. Inside Sapporo, subways and streetcars cover the compact centre for short-hop fares. If Hokkaido is part of a bigger rail trip, price the JR East-South Hokkaido Rail Pass (35,000 yen, 6 days) against your tickets - our Tokyo to Sapporo guide shows when it wins.
Activities: mostly gentle on the wallet
The Sapporo Beer Museum's self-guided visit is 1,000 yen per adult (official). The Mt Moiwa ropeway and cable car to the night-view summit is 2,100 yen round trip (official). Otaru's canal, glass workshops and music-box street are free to wander; you pay only for what you eat and buy. A couple doing one paid activity a day plus one Otaru return spends roughly 6,000 to 9,000 yen on sightseeing over three days.
Putting it together
Three nights in a central business-hotel double at survey rates: about 53,000 to 63,000 yen. Add trains and activities above and the non-food core of a 3-day Hokkaido trip lands around 60,000 to 75,000 yen for two - call it a mid-range Japan trip at a discount to Kyoto. In February, the hotel line alone can double. Food is the flexible part: conveyor-belt sushi, soup curry and miso ramen keep costs modest, and hotel breakfasts are the reliable vegetarian-light start. Our 3-day Hokkaido itinerary maps these numbers onto actual days.
