How much should an Indian couple budget for Kandy? Hotels, transport and activities

A dated, line-by-line Kandy budget for two in LKR and rough INR: SAARC temple tickets, guesthouse to heritage hotel tiers, tuk-tuk fares, and the three budgets most Indian couples land in.

The short answer

A 2-night Kandy trip for two typically lands between LKR 25,000 and LKR 90,000 (roughly Rs 7,000-25,000), excluding the journey from Colombo. Kandy is gentle on Indian wallets: the big sights cost less than a fancy dinner back home, and the real lever is whether you sleep in a Peradeniya Road guesthouse or a Lake Round heritage hotel. Prices checked October 2026 - confirm live rates, and note that Sri Lanka revises attraction tickets from time to time.

Sight tickets (the good news for Indians)

  • Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic: SAARC visitors (which includes Indians) pay LKR 2,500 per adult (from 1 July 2026, per the temple's official FAQ); the full foreign rate is LKR 3,000. Carry your passport - the SAARC rate is given on it.
  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya: around LKR 3,540 per foreign adult - check for a SAARC rate at the gate.
  • Bahirawakanda Big Buddha viewpoint: roughly LKR 500-600.
  • Kandyan dance show: a small ticket, usually LKR 1,000-2,000 - worth it once.
  • Kandy Lake round, the market, and the temple's evening ceremony atmosphere outside the paid zones: free.

Where you sleep

  • Guesthouses on and around Peradeniya Road: LKR 2,000-6,000 a night (roughly Rs 550-1,700). Simple, family-run, often with breakfast.
  • Lake Round and central mid-range hotels: LKR 8,000-15,000 a night - the location premium is real, everything becomes walkable.
  • Heritage and boutique stays: LKR 15,000-25,000+. Book early for the Esala Perahera season (July-August), when rates spike sharply.

Getting around

  • Tuk-tuks: LKR 200-500 per short ride - agree the fare first, or use PickMe (the local ride app) for metered pricing.
  • Local buses: LKR 20-50 per journey, crowded but genuine.
  • Colombo to Kandy: the scenic train is the classic (reserved seats are cheap but sell out - book ahead); buses and private cars cost more and save little time.
  • Day trips (Peradeniya, Pinnawala side trips): negotiate a half-day tuk-tuk or car, typically LKR 3,000-6,000 depending on distance and waiting.

Food

  • Lunch 'hotels' and bakeries: LKR 300-700 per person for rice and curry, kottu or short eats.
  • Mid-range restaurants around the lake: LKR 1,500-3,000 for two.
  • A realistic food budget for two: LKR 3,000-8,000 a day.

Three sample budgets for two (2 nights, excluding travel to Kandy)

  • Shoestring, around LKR 25,000 (Rs 7,000): guesthouse LKR 4,000 x 2, SAARC temple tickets LKR 2,500 x 2, tuk-tuks and buses, lunch-counter food, the lake and market free.
  • Comfortable, around LKR 55,000 (Rs 15,000): Lake Round mid-range LKR 10,000 x 2, temple + Peradeniya tickets, a dance show, restaurant dinners, one hired half-day tuk-tuk.
  • Premium, LKR 90,000+ (Rs 25,000+): heritage hotel LKR 18,000+ x 2, every sight, private car day trips, the nice tables.

Two rules whatever the tier: carry your passport for the SAARC ticket rate, and keep the exchange rate in your head as roughly LKR 350-360 to Rs 1,000 - it shifts, so check the week's rate before you fix numbers.
