How much should an Indian couple budget for Langkawi? Hotels, transport and activities

Langkawi surprises Indian travellers twice: once with how cheap the duty-free island can be, once with how fast the Cenang strip adds up. Real 2026 numbers for hotels, food, transport and activities - plus three complete couple budgets in ringgit and rupees.

The shape of a Langkawi budget

Langkawi is a duty-free island, which keeps some pleasures (chocolate, coffee, alcohol) cheaper than mainland Malaysia - but hotel and restaurant prices on the Pantai Cenang strip run on tourist logic. A couple's daily spend lands in one of three honest bands, excluding flights: shoestring around RM 250-350 per day (about ₹4,500-6,300), comfortable mid-range RM 500-800 (₹9,000-14,500), and resort-comfort RM 1,200 and up. Here is what builds each number, at roughly ₹18 to the ringgit.

Hotels: the biggest lever

  • Budget guesthouses and motels on and around the Cenang strip: RM 80-150 a night for a clean private room - a block back from the beach is the sweet spot, same beach, 30-50% less.
  • Mid-range beach resorts (pools, breakfast, direct sand): RM 250-450 a night on Pantai Cenang or Tengah.
  • Luxury (The Datai, Four Seasons, The Andaman): RM 1,500-3,500+ a night.

Peak season (December to March) adds 30-60% at beach properties, so book 6-8 weeks ahead then. Check the map view before paying: some "Pantai Cenang" hotels sit 1-2 km inland, and most quoted rates add tax and service charge on top.

Food: RM 10 or RM 100 - your choice, daily

The gap between eating like a local and eating like a tourist is the widest in Malaysia:

  • Hawker stalls, mamak restaurants and night markets: RM 7-15 a plate - roti canai for RM 2-4, nasi lemak RM 6-10, a full hawker dinner RM 12-25. The rotating pasar malam (night market) lands beside Cenang on Thursdays.
  • Cenang strip restaurants: RM 50-100 per person, and Indian restaurants cluster here and in Kuah's Little India for homesick evenings.
  • Duty-free bonus: a beachfront beer runs RM 6-8, about half mainland prices; Phuket and Bali cannot compete.

Transport: small numbers, one decision

There is no public bus network. Coupon taxi from the airport to Cenang is a fixed RM 18-24 per car; Grab rides around the island typically run RM 15-35. A couple doing two or three rides a day spends RM 60-100 - at which point a rental car (RM 60-100/day) or scooter (RM 30-60/day) breaks even and adds freedom. Rule of thumb: if you plan to see the SkyCab, the mangroves and the north beaches, rent wheels for at least two days.

Activities: few, but worth paying for

  • SkyCab cable car: about RM 85-90 per adult for the standard international ticket bought online (includes SkyDome, SkyRex and 3D Art at the base); the glass-bottom gondola at around RM 102 quietly includes the express lane, which otherwise costs extra.
  • Kilim Geoforest Park mangrove boat: RM 400 per boat for two hours (up to 10 people) at official published rates - a couple pays full boat price, so join a sharing tour (from about RM 69-120 per person) unless you are a group.
  • Island-hopping boat trips: RM 50-80 per person.
  • Beaches, sunsets and night markets: free, and honestly the best of Langkawi.

Three sample days, totalled

  • Shoestring (RM 250-350/day, ~₹4,500-6,300): guesthouse RM 100, hawker food RM 60, scooter RM 40 split, beach day. Every third day swap the beach for SkyCab and the average holds.
  • Mid-range (RM 500-800/day, ~₹9,000-14,500): resort RM 350, mixed dining RM 150, Grab rides RM 60, one paid activity averaged in.
  • Comfort (RM 1,200+/day, ~₹21,500+): luxury resort, restaurant meals, private transfers, spa.

Bottom line

A comfortable Indian couple's Langkawi week - mid-range hotel, real food, the SkyCab and a mangrove morning - runs about RM 3,500-5,000 (₹63,000-90,000) on the ground, flights extra. Spend on the room and the two great experiences; save on lunch. The island rewards exactly that split.

Questions on this article

asked by readers, answered by us

How much does a couple spend per day in Langkawi?

Excluding flights: a shoestring couple spends RM 250-350 (about ₹4,500-6,300) a day with a guesthouse, hawker food and a shared scooter; a mid-range couple spends RM 500-800 (about ₹9,000-14,500) with a beach resort, mixed dining and one paid activity a day. In December to March, hotels add 30-60%.

Is Langkawi expensive for Indian travellers?

Usually cheaper than an equivalent Goa or Kerala beach holiday. As a duty-free island many things cost less than mainland Malaysia, and clean rooms near the beach start at RM 80-150 a night. Food ranges from RM 7-15 hawker plates to RM 50-100 per person at strip restaurants - the budget is firmly in your hands.

How much cash should we carry in Langkawi?

Hotels and larger restaurants accept international cards, but taxi counters, night markets and hawker stalls want cash. A couple is comfortable carrying RM 200-400 a day; ATMs are available in Cenang and Kuah. For mental maths, the ringgit sits at roughly ₹18 to RM 1.
